Woods TW-5G cam; opinions please.
« on: April 09, 2009, 04:37:29 PM »

Getting ready to replace the stock cams, plate, and oil pump on the 05 SEEG, and thought I had decided on the Red Shift 575 bolt-in cams.  While I was talking to the guy who will be doing the tuning, he offered up an opinion that the Woods TW-5G would be a better choice.  Has anyone here used this cam, and if so what do you think?

I'm a little concerned after looking at the timing specs that it may boost the cranking compression a little higher than I would like.  If anyone has one of those calculators that will take static compression and cam specs to calculate cranking pressure, please plug in the data and let me know what you come up with.

Stock CVO103, 8.9:1 compression ratio

Woods TW-5G:
Timing @ .053"    Intake 17° / 37°      Exhaust 39° / 15°
Duration @ .053"   234° / 234°
Lift                    .575" / .575"
Lift @ TDC          Intake .174"     Exhaust .160"

Thanks for your input.

Using these assumtions:
Head cc's @ 96, gasket thickness @ 0.045 (stock), 0 deck height

The CVO-253 cam corrected compression is 7.72:1 with cold cranking pressure @152 @ Sea level
The Wood 5G cam corrected compression is 8.34:1 with cold cranking pressure @168 @ Sea level

The short duration of the 5G cam will make it a torque monster.

Also the 5 cam is not availible in 99-06 chain drive, only gear. It is availible as a conversion cam using the 07-up plate and pump assembly

A great cam and it is available for "conversion" older bikes to hydra-chain, gear drive or late model 07up chain drive
Perfect for a 103CVO maybe a little on the short side for a 110 unless big fat midrange torque was the only goal.
Likely not a bolt-in for the 05 sorry to say. Cam chest grinding likely and valve springs changed, minimum

I have to disagree with this, The CVO103 heads can handle the 575 lift without issue. I have also personally done many, and know of many more, of 575 lift cams in the 103 engines that have not had any case clearance issues.

Thanks for the feedback Jim and Dewey, I appreciate it.  At least I feel better about the cranking pressure, now I just have to guesstimate how much that short duration will kill the top end.  I'm guessing output will drop off fairly quickly over 4000-4500 rpm, but it should pull stumps down low.  Wouldn't be my first choice on a smaller bike, but it might be almost perfect for a bagger.

Jerry,

If you haven't bought any parts yet I would suggest you call Woods.

When I called I talked to Booby Woods himself, very pleasant, very informative. Give it a shot.

Not sure the year break, I get 103 heads that are standard issue 88" heads and the 103+ heads. The 103+ heads will take the lift fine and work right out of the box. The 88" heads will coil bind and or retainers hit the seals.

The CVO type 103" heads are not the same as the 88" heads from any of the 103" production years (03-06), and the 103+ heads are different as well with a different combustion chamber and larger valves. The CVO heads have the "Screamin' Eagle 103" script on them whereas the 103+ heads just have the "Screamin Eagle" script.

And any of the logo heads have the springs to take the TW5 cams as a bolt-in as long as the lobe clearance is checked at the pinion boss and the lifter bores. I use three wraps of black tape to be sure there is adequate clearance.

Thought I'd update this after my conversation with Bobby Wood.  First, he recommended the TW-7 instead of the TW-5 in the CVO103.  Just like some of us, he felt the TW-5 would be a little short in the 103.

Second, he prefers doing the hydraulic tensioner conversion using the '07 and later stock parts rather than the latest conversion kit from H-D.  The 25284-08 kit allows use of 99-06 (05 Dyna) cams, but it also uses the old inner silent chain rather than the new roller chain.  The down side to using the late model plate, in my opinion, is that it doesn't use roller bearings for the cams.  Can't have it all, I guess.  His conversion cams are made to work with the new plate and the old size inner cam bearings, just like those from Andrews.
