Northern Georgia - Maggie Valley June 09
« on: June 05, 2009, 09:02:47 AM »

We went to Northern Georgia early this week. Tried for reservations at Copperhead Lodge but was informed they were booked.

That turned out to be BS.

We stopped by along our rides there was not a soul to be found.

We ended up in Suches, GA. Stayed at one of the many "cabins" available. Actually just a small ranch.

The roads around Northern Georgia are nice to ride, just nothing to see. Wasted several hours in Helen. Unless you are a tourist you would be better off to just keep riding.

Saw lots of snakes in GA, mostly on the road, some made it - some didn't.
One large black bear scurried across the road in front of us (at night when we were in the truck).

Had fantastic weather. Had the XM weather - Doppler radar turned on for the trip. Allowed us to change our route to avoid a couple of boomers that pooped up.

Had great weather for the trip up to Maggie Valley Wednesday. Left a little late for a ride and by the time we sat down to eat in Gatlinburg it started to rain.

Has not stopped since for more then an hour.

Friday morning now, waiting for what hopes to be clearing skies to try and get to the western end.

Every time we got ready to leave today the skies opened up.

Gotta tell you, the parking lot at Rocky Waters is like ice when wet. Looks like it was recently top coated.

We finally left in the rain with promising skies ahead.

Once we left the valley the rain was gone.

Parts of the Hellbender are now completely repaved, very nice.

Many of the side pull offs on the Dragon are being paved, that is good for letting the rockets zip by. Only one troop on the
road today and he was busy writing a ticket when we passed.

We started heading to the Cherohala from there and turned around about 10 miles past the Foothills parkway. I don't think our passengers would have made it.

My goal was to hit the little restaurant on the river at the west end of the Skyway, but being over an hour away and no guarantee they would be open .............

There is a new BBQ - burger place at the 129 - 72 intersection (up past the Foothills).

We ate there, it was OK. From there it was back down the Dragon. It was dark by the time we were passing through Cherokee and just outside of town we saw a pair of bear cubs, one on either side of the road on 19.

Soon as we pulled into the parking lot it started to rain.

Sorry we missed you!  Brian (103Thunder) and I were in the same area June 1-4.  We also stopped by CHL on Tuesday, locked up tight.  I just don't see them staying in business much longer.

Helen isn't that special but it does have some good places to stop for lunch and have a cold beer.  Also some great roads on the north side of town!

I'll agree that north GA isn't a great place to site see but you can't beat the roads!

All those critters you're seeing in the Smokeys at night is another reason to get back to the camp site before dark.  How's the scooter running since doing all the work to it?  :nixweiss: spyder

When Brian posted that you two would be there I mentioned we would be there too, no response

Didn't get any beer, although I was hankering for one ion the Bavarian restaurant we had lunch at.

Well Spyder - you know what they about the best laid plans .........................

Getting back at 10 was after turning around on the up past the Foothills.

The rain just slowed us down too much, but , it is what it is.

Bike runs good but I really need to get it tuned or do my own thing. Only getting about 31-33 MPG. And I need to adjust the valves, they are a bit noisy.
Didn't pay much attention to it until I rode with the half helmet  :nixweiss:

Duane,  :bananarock:Really liked the reports and pictures, hope to ride with you soon.

Guess we were in your area too. We ended up in Charlotte around 7 Saturday night. Spent the night there then headed home Sunday morning.
Had hoped to do some visiting and riding while there but that didn't happen.
