Service Manuals for DIY weekend mechanics
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:02:36 PM »

Anybody know who has the best non OEM repair manual for our 09 SERG?  I can't find any online, only FLT general manuals and only up to 2008.  Is there anything out yet other than MoCo's?

Clymer is the most likely option.  Though they usually run a year or so behind on brand new models.  Their manuals aren't really any better than bike specific OE manuals though.  They usually include wire diagrams that can be helpful.  But as a service manual they're just ok.  Not bad.  But not stellar either.

Buy the MOCO service manuals and parts manuals and be done with it.  The Clymer manual tells you just enough to get in trouble.

I agree the Harley manuals are the best manuals I have used. They are like "Motorcycle Repair for Dummies"

Truth be told after a little familiarity is gained 90% or more of what you'll do won't require more than just the illustrations in the parts manual.  Pictures good.  Words confuse me....

Better if you invest in the MoCo manuals-

09 Touring Models: part number 99483-09- retail is $60
09 CVO FLTRSE3 Supplement: part number  99600-09 retail is $40

If you go on to Chicago Harley Davidson website- you can probably buy these for 20%off.

And you need both ?
or is the FLTRSE3 enough ?

You "need" the general Touring manual.  The supplement is just that; a manual that supplementally details only those things that are different between the standard touring models and the specific bike in question.  So most is covered in the general manual.

:2vrolijk_21:    They're not cheap but get the HD service manual and SERG supplement (part numbers above).  For a few bucks more, get the SERG Parts catalog. #99433-09.  Just the instructions on service will allow you to do your 5k, 10k services, etc.  Do one service yourself.  Even with a few tools and an oil drain pan... you'll save money.  It's worth the peace of mind.

Just learning how to properly switch windshields made it worth it, not to mention fairing removal.
