How difficult to install handle bars on 09 SERG?
« on: April 15, 2009, 09:28:22 AM »

Has anyone installed new handle bars on their 09 SERG - not the dealer, I'm asking if someone on the forum actually done it? The 09 SERG bars are not right for me and I ordered the same bars I had on my 2008 Road Glide - Hells Foundry's 1.25 fat bars. These bars don't look like much and I don't see much talk about them but I rode my 2008 from Boston to California last year - 19 days on the road an felt very comfortable with them. I'm sure there are other choices but for me, the Hells Foundry bars worked.

With that, I haven't changed bars with the TBW and wanted to know if this is something I should leave in the hands of the dealer. I have the repair manuals but was just checking if forum members would say, go for it - I've done it in 2 hours etc... no problem.

Looking forward to hearing from those that have changed bars.

Thanks

I may be worng, but I thought that the Hells Foundrys bars are identical to the stock RG bar, just 1.25 as opposed to 1 inch.  they did this so that folks could do internal wiring.  Just my 2 cents.  To answer your question, no I have not changed bars.

I am planning to install 18" apes from Wild 1 on my 09 SERG.  The reason I posted the link to their website is because they are very helpful with information on brake and clutch hydraulic line length as well as sources for wiring harnesses if you call them.

Be sure the bars you are moving to are fitted for TBW. Otherwise there is a lot of mods needed. I did it with a set of earlier bars. Got it done, but was work.

The Wild 1 bars are already set up for throttle by wire.

Yes, the Hells Foundry bars are set up for the TBW as well. I ran into that problem on the 2008 I had and talked with them extensively to make sure the new version of their bars meet the TBW technology.

TLR - I asked that question regarding the similarity of their bars compared to the standard Road Glide bars and they state that they follow the designed but they are different than the standard Road Glide bars. I bought them for the 2008 for the reason you stated - to have internally wired lines but they were a little different. But here is the rub, the 2009 SERG bars are way different than the standard Road Glide bars. I had the Hells Foundry bars on top of the SERG bars last night and you can easily see the difference. The SERG bars are a lot wider and designed more like drag bars in my opinion and caused my wrist to hurt after several hundred miles, which as stated in my opinion tread, I was able to go cross country on the Hells Foundry without a hint of pain.

Thanks for all of the responses thus far but I still looking for that brave soul that has change these bars him / herself.

I have been all over the internet trying to find a bar with the same or close hand angle as the standard bar but being 2" closer to me.  Haven't found anything yet, may have a set custom made.  The bars are the last comfort item that I changed.  Did the seat/backrest and floorboard extenders but the bar is still too far away.  Good luck hunting, keep us in the loop.

I remember BB did his bike, with the help of Beagle. I thing it was a bit of a project and a few trip to Beag's liquor cabinet. You can PM BB but you have to cross over the bridge.  ;D
