Heat Management System
« on: May 11, 2009, 07:44:14 PM »

I have a 2007 Ultra with the 110 in it. I have had so much trouble with this engine it is unreal. I am working on my second motor and it's not looking good either. After Harley replaced the first motor, I bribed them into putting a premium oil cooler in it so I sprung for the Oil Temp gauge. Currently the weather here in central Texas has been great for riding, upper 70's to mid 80's. This thing is running at 230 degrees when the outside temp is 72 and if I stop, the Heat Management System kicks in every time. I ask the dealer why it's running so hot and was told (in writing) that 285 to 300 degrees is no big deal. I would have to disagree, at that temp the oil is breaking down.

Does anyone know what temp this 07 Ultra with the 110 should be running at? Should the HMS be kicking in at 230 degrees? Wonder what this thing is going to do when it does get hot in central Texas.......

BH.....   I don't have all the answers you're looking for,  but your situation doesn't sound good.  If you haven't been keeping up with it,  you ought to review the last 3 or 4 issues of American Iron Magazine and Donny Petersens articles on the "Problems with the 110 motor".

He goes into extreme technical detail about what he feels are the underlying problems with the 110.  Not sure that what he describes (mostly rear cylinder head gasket problems and leakage).........are related to your problems but they could be.  If you look at those articles,  I think he recommends a dual oil cooler setup.

Hopefully you are using 100 percent synthetic oil too.  fyi..........

230 degrees is a long shot from running hot.  :nixweiss: Is this at the high end, in other words are you seeing 230 in stop and go traffic? Is bike running cooler then this out in open freeway,, if you have answered yes,, Don't put youself through any more stress these operating temps are good  :nixweiss:

I agree. 230 is totally fine and I see those temps regularly. If really hot mine runs at around 270. Still no problem in my mind.

Ride safely,

Currently I take it to the dealership for all services so they put the oil in it, but yes, it's synthetic. As far as the temp goes, running down the road in the early mornings with the outside temp around 72 degrees, it runs at 230 and when I come to a stop, the HMS kicks in. If 230 is the norm then why is the HMS always kicking in at pretty much every stop?

Why brand of oil are they putting in?  I am not a fan of SYN3 after reading many posts on oils.  Just my $0.02 worth.

Here's a quick history of the bike:
1.  Purchased in Feb 2007.
2.  1k service completed in Apr 07, serviced with SYN3.
3.  5k service completed in Aug 07, serviced with SYN3. Oil leak on rear cyclinder (gasket job completed to correct leak).
4.  Base gasket leak on rear cyclinder in Sep 07. Another gasket job completed to attempt to correct leak. (supposedly HD came out with a different gasket type/style).
5.  Rear cyclinder leak (3rd time) replaced rear cylinder 3 Oct 07. (10k service completed)
6.  Front cyclinder leak, replaced front cylinder 24 Oct 07.
7.  15K service completed on 16 May 08 (all is well, at least I thought it was).
8.  29 May 08, leaking compression release valves. Set in the shop for 30 days.
9.  26 Sep 08, noise coming from primary (which had to be rebuilt), and noise from engine. (Motor replaced). (20K service completed)
10. Idling issue, installed updated download.
11. 25k service completed on 1 May 09. (Synthetic, lubricant 99824-03/00QT)

Right now the HMS is always kicking in no matter what the temp is outside. The bike runs at 230 degrees and at that temp the HMS kicks in. If 230 to 280 is normal temp for this 110, then why is the HMS always kicking in at a stop?

The EITMS (engine idle temperature management system) isn't triggered by oil temperature, it's triggered by cylinder head temperature.  You may want to have the sensor checked to make sure it isn't reading too high.

The 230°F oil temperature is right on the specification for normal operating temperature per Harley's manuals.  You really don't want it to run significantly lower than that.  I assume when you had the oil cooler installed they also installed the thermostat; it doesn't even start to open until you get to 180°F and only gets to fully open at 210°F.

BTW, I notice you said you had the oil temp gauge installed.  Where did you put the sending unit, in the oil cooler line or in the oil pan?  Unless H-D changed something, the original instructions placing the sending unit in the cooler line resulted in a disfunctional gauge that didn't reflect real world oil temps.  There are some threads around here about that and about the alternative sender location in the oil pan.

Mine would run about 340 degrees when the temps get over 75 and they said that there is nothing to worry about.

The sensor for the gauge is in the oil pan.

I HOPE you are talking about engine temp, not oil temp!!!
