Frame Bolts
« on: April 13, 2009, 01:17:49 PM »

Those with a torque wrech, I strongly suggest to you to check the torque spec on your frame bolts.  5 out of 6 of mine were not torqued to spec and were an 1/8 to 1/2 turn under spec.    Don't know if this is the norm, but something you might want to check out to be sure.

For the technologically challenged, can you add a picture what to check where? Would be great ..

I would if the bike was here it is still at the dealer.   If you take off your bags and side covers there are 2 bolts high and one lower.   Hopefully someone can take a picture for me and post it for you.

Yes Correct Talon 09 Frame for 09 SE Ultra.   The reds must be so fast the bolts come loose  ::)   :huepfenlol2:

Can you tell us which frame bolts you are talking about and what is the torque they are supposed to be at.

Thanks

Here's the referenced bolts and the recommended torque sequence.  Torque values are 40-50 ft. lbs.  As you probably already know, these are in the "critical fastener" list and should be checked every 5k miles.  The procedure to check them is to set your wrench at the lowest setting (40 ft lbs) in the range and test them in the sequence shown.  If any bolt turns or tightens, then remove and inspect/clean the bolt, replace the locking agent (if it has one) and reinstall and torque to spec.

Once again I am amazed by the way H-D tries to lay off their issues in process and torque control by adding another item to the "critical fastener" list and telling the customer to check it every 5k miles.  If they design the joints properly, and specify the correct fasteners with the correct locking agents (thread locking patches, mechanical locks, etc.), and then install the fasteners properly at the assembly plant, there should be no need to check them at dealer prep, then at 1k, then at each subsequent 5k, forever and ever.  If the stuff was screwed together correctly in the first place, it wouldn't be coming loose.  Any aircraft types want to give us a quick class on safety wiring?  Maybe that's the answer to H-D and their loose nuts.

One other thing, and not to dismiss the original post.  Frame bolts being tight is something worth knowing for sure :drink: .

But....

The original warning came from a concern over bolts moving an 1/8th of a revolution or so on a bolt that should be 50 ft pds.  An 1/8th of a turn is the variation in the accuracy of torque wrenches.

I'm not sure there is an epidemic of these bolts coming loose.  Mine haven't budged.  As for putting them on the critical fastener list for regular inspection, I'd consider that recommendation good risk management for the Moco and the rider alike.
