Connection for Garage Door Opener SERG
« on: May 13, 2009, 09:55:11 PM »

Has anyone put the garage door opener fairing unit on a new SERG? I was installing the Hawg Wired System today and briefly looked for the connector that should be there to plug the Garage Door Controller into, no sign, is it back inside the speedometer/tach housing? And how exactly (correctly) does the speedo hsg come apart?

Thanks

I don't think you need to get into the speedo housing, unless you really want to.

If you're looking for the power wire, use any orange/white wire for power & ground it wherever you like.  There should be one (orange/white) coming off the headlamp loom. When in doubt, use the cigar lighter wires.  Then, splice into the white and yellow headlamps wires for the trigger and you're done.

Thanks for the reply but this should not be a "SPLICE" connection, it should plug in, I just couldn't find the plug in the fairing and wondered if it is in the speedo hsg or just pushed back in the frame.
I never splice a oe wiring harness, you can buy a new HD headlamp plug, which comes with wiring and the male side of the plug on the garage door opener unit and make yourself a slick little plug in connector that requires no splicing, I just think the wires/plug are already there, they were on my SEEG and a friends Ultra, just wondered where they were.

I prefer solder whenever possible, but did notice an empty terminal end (for power) coming out of the headlight loom -- orange with white stripe.  The instructions say it's the "unused position lamp connector" and calls for the use of this wire with the garage door opener transmitter wire of the same color.

From the instructions (do you have them?):

Sealed Butt-Splice Connectors, All Models

Butt-splicing is a necessary step in the installation of the transmitter to the motorcycle.

The instructions go on to describe every wire, and where/how to "splice" with their plastic butt-splice connectors.  I don't think you'll find plugs.

I believe this is for the international models, for extra lights. yes you can use it, unless you go international.

Thanks for the replies, got a new headlamp plug today, comes with the pigtail, bought the mail plug that came on a 05 SEEG wiring harness to plug in the garage door opener actuator that was standard on that bike. Plug the mail end into the female end of the actuator, soldered male wire ends on the new h/l plug and pluged the existing left h/l connector into the new plug and then to the headlamp, everything worked, no splices, cost $12.00 and will unplug and go to next bike. After making the pigtail asm it took less than a minute to connect.

Excellent methodology and execution.  Now, maybe you should go into business making up pigtails for everyone else. ;D

The SEEG's came with the opener already installed, so I didn't realize the new bikes don't have connectors already in place in the fairings.  You would think an extra connector as a standard part of the harness wouldn't cause the MoCo to go broke for pete's sake.  I agree that wire taps and various other types of solderless connectors are not the method of choice, and this pigtail idea is great.

I'm confused...my '04 SE electra glide didn't need anything extra to actuate the HD garage door opener.  Just needed to push the bright/dim switch.  Am I hearing that my '09 SERG won't be compatible with my HD opener?

It will, you just need to purchase/install the transmitter -- inside the fairing.  It functions the same way, with a flick of the hi/lo beam switch.

Your 09 is not equipped with any garage door opener parts. You can install one, but it is (I think) $70 for the bike part that you need, assuming you still have the home part of the system from your 04.

I just did the installation as recommended in the instructions that came with the transmitter.  I wish I had thought of making a connector like that , because the 1st thing I did was cut the OEM wires to the lamp connector (as described ).  it didnt feel good.  Then I used the flimsy Butt Connectors to attach the whole thing.  It works fine, but im starting to have nightmares about loosing my lights and shorting my system on the highway when one of those butt connectors fails!   I may open it up again in the near future and solder all the connections instead.

I would, solder and heat shrink it

yes, im definetly going to solder and heat shrink it.  I wonder why they dont sell the trasnmitter equipped with a connector that piggybacks onto the lamp connector.  Their directions are so "matter of fact" about cutting the harness, and now that I did it , in retrospect , I would have preferred not.

Seriously buy an extra headlamp plug from the dealer, I will take a photo of the adapter we made for mine next time I have fairing off. Very simple, no splicing at all and it just plugs in. Put a piece of HD Velcro between headlamps to hold the door opener module and your done.
