Navigation question
« on: May 23, 2009, 04:33:49 PM »

 :-\

OK,  I have yet to get my new naviagion system working.  I got a 3 volume set of CDs for the entire country.  Since I live on the east coast,  I loaded the one for the east.

That one should cover most anywhere I'd be until we head out to Sturgis.

So here is my question...........I thought once I had downloaded the (east coast) CD,  I could take it out and put it away.......so I could play cds.

Now when I attempt to get it to work,  it keeps asking me to download the cd that I HAVE ALREADY DOWNLOADED....... >:(

As long as I am trying to input a destination that (I know....geographically) should be on that cd,  I thought all should work......but now I'm re-reading the damn booklet and it appears (maybe) that ya gotta put the damn thing back in there EVERY TIME you want to enter a new destination!!!!!??????

Anybody understand my problem :nervous:

That is one option on the SE that is pretty much useless. Aside from your concern there is no map - just directions. Thats why most of us that choose to use a GPS unit buy a stand-a-lone unit such as Garmin.

Map data does not download from the disc to the radio.  Unit only reads the disc as it needs it.  Unit has no internal flash memory large enough to accept even one disk's data.  If you use the nav you don't play CDs at the same time.  Harley application techology; antiquated at release.

It gets better...
I never use the CD player because I have everything on an Ipod.   So I leave the nav cd in the player all of the time just so I won't have to dig thru my tourpack if I decide to use it.  Consequently, everytime I start the motorcycle, I get the lawyer warning that I have to thumb through to get back to my device.  Sheesh.  You'd also think that by 2009 they would put an Ipod interface module on the radio in addition to the aux jack.  But what the hell do I know, I'm 53.

From my very limited understanding of the GPS system...........You have to have the nav cd installed when you enter your intended destination.  Once the information (streets, turns, etc) is downloaded, you can remove your nav cd from the radio.   However, as soon as you enter a new destination, you must put the nav cd back in again.

System is antiquated at best, but it guided me on a 1000 mile trip around eastern and southern Washinton fairly accurately.

I think it only loads a "bubble" of information covering your route.  It maps the roads it EXPECTS you to take when you start, then you can take the CD out.  You know you have strayed off course when it prompts you to reinsert the CD while driving...

The European version seems to have more detail and small roads on it.  However where I live in Germany is stored on the France map.  I usually need to insert the Germany CD and the France CD before I head out on a trip using it.  In CONUS I usually kept the East Coast CD in it - my iPod has all my good songs on it and is easier than swapping CDs anyway.

I agree, how annoying to go through that everytime you start up!!

If you ignore the warning long enough it does go away.  I have on occasion refused to push the "OK" button on principal.
