Really weird security system malfunction
« on: May 13, 2009, 11:08:37 PM »

Once each, yesterday and today, the security system on my CUSE4 acted up very mysteriously.  Yesterday, after riding it for about 130 miles I parked it on the street to take a break, putting it on the jiffy stand.  The alarm activated -first giving the warning chirps and then the alarm sounded for the 30 second cycle (which seems like an hour by-the-way when you're standing there looking like an idiot in front of God and everybody.)  Moving the key fob around has no effect.  I tried to manually clear it with the code, but could not gain access using the turn signal buttons.  For some reason, I stood the bike up and attempted to start it and it worked.  We continued our trip.
Today, on the return trip home, I stopped in the same town in about the same hundred block of the same street.  And the same thing happened.   Being a fairly slow learner, I let it cycle two or three times alternating between urges to kick the sh!t out of it or just walk across the street and pretend like it wasn't mine and see if it would quit throwing the tantrum on its own.  Fortunately, I resisted both urges and recalling some of my life's experience at troubleshooting I decided to try something different.  I turned the front wheel in the opposite direction (from full-lock left to full-lock right) and the problem cleared itself.  Turn it full-lock right, problem recurs.  Take it off the jiffy-stand and stand it upright, problem clears.  Back on the jiffy stand, problem recurs.  Both times I was parked next to a CUSE3 which did not experience any problems.

Got back on and rode it 100 miles back home with a few intermittent stops and problem never recurs regardless of configuration.

Here are the three constants I have identified:
In the town of Santa Margarita, CA. (SR 58, just North of San Luis Obispo, CA).
On the jiffy stand.
Front wheel full-lock left.

Any idears?

Could be the location. I parked in an area in town one time on my Heritage. The alarm would not set. My buddies would not set either. After leaving and stopping somewhere else they both worked fine. Back to the same location would not work. Some kind of interference with the radio signal to set the alarm.

I used to take my bike downtown with me to one of my accounts. Where I would park the bike it actually ruined the security system interface with the fob. After I got my bike fixed the only thing I could fiqure was causing the problem was that they have a closed circuit security camera outside actually pointing where my bike was parked. I would have to enter the code via handlebar to start up and leave every time. I never park there again. And I've never had the problem since. The dealer had to replace my transmitter fob and delete then reload the security system to cure the problem. What a pain in the A@# it was. I almost just told the dealer to cancel the security system all together, but at the last minute decided to keep it. The way I see it, if the person or persons can "walk away" with a 900 lb motorcycle, better let them have it, I'll deal with the insurance company later.  I was at a Red & White BBQ a few years back when I was riding my 1982 FXS Shovelhead Low Rider, and was talking to a full patch member about the best way to keep my bike safe from being stolen, and he remarked, If your bike is really "wanted" by someone, "it's gone", simple as that. No matter how big, how heavy, security system whatever, don't matter, period.. I believed him, big time.. I was happy and relieved to see my bike was still parked where I left it earlier waiting on me at the end of the day though in a sea of Red & White HAMC marked bikes all around mine..I considered myself lucky, my bike was a kick start super clean shovel FX which stood out like a sore thumb
around all the EVO's and Twin Cam bikes parked around it.

Okay, I'm going to need some more help with this one.  It has happened a few more times and I can now rule out location as a factor as it has occurred in my garage in my home town and once in a restaurant parking lot in the mountains east of the city.  The system and gives warning chirps when the key is turned to ignition and the front wheel is pointed to the left.  This time the malfunction did not clear simply by pointing the wheel to the right, but when I moved the wheel rapidly from left-to-right-to-left-to-right a few times it stopped malfunctioning and allowed me to start the bike.
Is there some kind of sensor or connector in the fairing that would have something to do with the security system?  Any other ideas?  I'm pretty sure the dealer will have a tough time with it because it occurs randomly and I'm sure it will never malfunction when it is parked on the dealer lot.

Maybe the lean angle component of the TSSM?  Bike doesn't know when its angle has or has not changed.  Lean angle sensor all part of the TSSM anyway.  So it's all one piece.

I am gonna throw this out there.......

I had similar issues after I washed the bike, there are a couple of wire harnesses that had a turn in the and water collected in them. I told the dealer about it, they went in and disconnected the wire harnesses and squeezed silicone in them and then placed a zip tie around it (waterproofing at it's finest). I cannot say it worked yet but I am aware that water was collecting in them causing Alarm issues and I threw about 10 different codes.

Just something to think about.

They filled a plug with silicone?  Rather then dielectric grease or something like that?  Silicone sets up god help anyone needing to get those connectors back apart later.

No sir, they put silicone in the sleeve that holds the wires so water doesn't get passed. The conduit if that makes sense then zip tied it for somewhat of a seal until it oozed out. I think you get the idea.
I was not too impressed, but understood the attempt. I will just have to see what happens after my next wash.

Good luck with it.  Hope the gremlins are kept out.  Might hit an auto parts store or marine shop and get a good tube of dielectric grease to finish what they've started.  Most parts store have the Permatex brand of the product.

This is not my issue, it's Harley's.
I will continue to wash this bike just like all the others I have had. My dealer is pretty good, there is a process they have to go through for claims. They will most likely have to replace the harnesses that are giving me problems.
Just working the bugs out. Never had so many issues before, but they are working with me. Can't be mad if they are helping, it's when they stop helping........

This was just a suggestion for the security issue, it may or may not help.
