last question before build
« on: June 06, 2009, 06:06:36 PM »

My 07 seuc goes in to the shop on the 22nd for the following enhancements tw7h cams, adjustable pushrods, 50mm tb, headwork, cosmetic .30 head gasket, plus all the misc bearing etc that go with it. My question is should I do the 10.5-1 pistons. I had decided against them because we ride 2 up most of the time and pull a trailer alot in the mountains of CO and TN. I don't want to have pinging problems or to build anymore heat is this a concern or should I have them put in while the bike is apart?

What do you guys think

Thanks

id weld the crank and put in timkins while its apart

as for compression - depends on what gas you use, if you run mid grade often you probably dont want to go higher compression

My SM told me not to do it for the same reason. He told me to save the $$$, imagine that!

I would not use the 10.5:1 pistons unless you were changing cams and getting head work done to reduce the corrected compression.

We also pull a trailer, 2-up, on the 96" '09 ultra. This is a stock bike with a TTS, mufflers, air cleaner.
We are way overloaded! Bike is running great, we keep the top speed under 75, have to down shift on the hills. Ran regular gas a few times when we had to. NO problems, pulls fine, runs fine. This is a STOCK motor, great gas mileage, and nice cool running. I would really consider low compression, good torque cams, mile tune. You are pulling a lot of weight, you need to low rpm torque. I ride most of the time between 2000-3500 RPM. This is where the stock cams work. My big motor bike would probably not be as reliable on this trip, I will keep it for hot-rodding on shorter trips, without the trailer!
Consider how you ride, and build the motor where you spend most of your time. There is much more enjoyment to have that torque when you need it! Try a pull from 2000 rpm with your load, and see if the power comes on smooth.
Just my opinion, of course!!!
