Stupid Question but Help Me Out
« on: May 27, 2009, 08:28:02 AM »

OK I'm the proud owner of a new 08 FXDSE2 and have been out of the bike world for about 10 yrs( Ex Cop Motor officer). Anyway due to no room in my garage I have to place my bike in a private storage place. I have an 105th Anniversary cover and naturally after riding the bike is hot. If I place the cover on while the bike is hot Will it damage the cover? If so I'll have to return to the storage place later and cover my jewel.
I'm too embarrassed to ask at the local HD dealer so I'm asking youse guys & gals. Be gentle I bruise easily.

Couple of thins can and will happen

Heat will cause the cover to allow moisture to gather under the cover...moisture is bad to electronics

Heat will melt cover

Had an unfortunate incident, garage fire, so I am also doing the storage shuffle.. Same deal too damn hot, finally took a small folding chair and my favorite chitter reading material and I even found an old mp3 player laying around. So when I put her up it usually takes 1/2 hr, I've found it takes a-lot of dedication, but for the time being it is what it is!!

I've got a stupid question of my own.  Why do you need to cover the bike while it's in a storage unit?  I'm assuming you're talking about one of those places that rent you storage space in what looks like a bunch of attached garages, each with it's own garage door and padlock.  Are those places subject to excessive amounts of dust?  I don't cover my bike between rides, and it sits in a garage alongside momma's car and the lawnmower and about 8 tons of other junk, often with the door open for extended periods.  I would guess that my garage with it's heavily used door would be more dusty than a place where the door stays shut most of the time. :nixweiss:

Anyhow, if you want to cover the bike to keep dust off but don't want to wait for it to cool off first, see if you can't rig some type of breathable cover that can be supported by a simple framework or be suspended from the ceiling.  Something like old bedsheets might work, make it big enough to totally clear the bike so it doesn't touch anywhere, roll the bike in and close the flap, and you're done.

Man you'd be surprised the amount of dust that accumulates in those places.
