Fuel Pump Noise
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:07:03 AM »

Just got back from a trip to the J&P 30th event and noticed the fuel pump making a hissing sound. Seems to be running fine, but when you turn on the ignition for the prime, it's way louder that normal. In fact so loud, you can hear it when the bike is running down the road. I have noticed it getting louder since the beginning of this season.

Before I bring it in, I wonder if anyone has ran into this before? I'm wondering if it might be the infamous hole in the fuel line in the tank deal? However, there is no change in the sound whether the tank is full or very low, and again, I'm not getting any stuttering as I run it low, so I'm just not sure.

Just makes me a little uneasy with some more trip on the horizon...

They'll know for sure when they pull the sender and pump unit but sure sounds like the problem to me.

In my case it was a hole in the hose.   Apparently it is pretty common per the dealer and what ends up happening is chaffing of the hose as it rubs until you get a hole in the hose.

See, I would think that if there was a hole in the pickup line, that you'd start hearing different sounds as the fuel level gets lower and closer to the hole? That's my peanut logic at least?

Is this hose an easy replacement? Do you need any special tools? Even though I have the HD extended warranty, I think it's a $100 deductible, so if it's only a couple of dollar hose, I'll handle myself, if I don't need anything special.
