Dyno Meter Tune or Not ?
« on: July 10, 2009, 09:38:04 AM »

Gents;

Brand new to the Harley world (love it) but long time rider of all sorts (but until now RoadKing).  I found a great 2007 CVO deal, 3,000 miles. recall done, sounds, runs great.  Lotsof extras and price was the lowest I have seen on a 3,000 mile old bike.

It has the V&H True Duals aftermarket pipes and for the life of me I can not find out if the prior owner had it dyno tuned ... after putting the new pipes on, slips on I believe.   In checking with a well known and recommended HD shop, it is costly to have it dyno tuned and they want to keep a bike several days so my question is how important is it on theser air cooled engines?   Especially the 110's ?

It runs great now, but if it was not done Im in fear of that 110 engine running too lean causing issues later on.  I do have the 3 year warranty on it.

Thanks

Run it a bit and take a look see at the plugs...
Grayish tan on the insulator tip good...white too lean need to add fuel in a tune.

Does it have a tuner of any kind? If not, than wasn't tuned. If it has a tuner you can check the map.

Yea, it's a lot of $$$$!!! For just a set of slipons, you might want to look for a independent shop that will give you a basic tune for a lot less. If you had a lot of work done I could see a full tune, like heads, cams, pistons. I added slipons and a A/C, the local shop, NOT HD, had a special on dyno runs for $25 dollars, had mine done after loading a map to my PCIII. They found a few spots that could use a change to the air/fuel, they charged me another $50 to adjust and rerun on the dyno. It runs good, probably could squeeze a little more out of it with a full tune, but for $75 vs $400, I'll keep it for now. By the way $800 is a bit much, with your setup you shouldn't need a lot of tuning, I can't see any more that $400. Shop around if you go for a full tune, talk to others in your area that have had bikes tuned, see where they went and how they like the tune.

Craig, I'm not familiar with the SERT from '07.  Does it plug in and give access to the tuner, AND then get removed after the tune is done?

I know my PCMIII has to be coupled into the line and stay there to operate.  I had the PCMIII on my '08 SERK when in Sturgis last year.  While at the one location where they had their Top 50 show, I had it done right then and there.  I paid $350 for the tune and it runs a lot better and I gained 9hp and some torque over the canned map I downloaded from Power Commander's website.

Two Wheels;

So if there is PCMIII (or other type of controller) or SERT, the bill for tuning could run upwards to $800 after they install a tuner module of some sort.  Some of the Auto Tune systems cost that much alone.

Good luck with your new bike.

I have the PCIII, but if you have an SERT, you should have software and the cable for the SERT, and you would be able to see the map. If he didn't get the cable and software, I'd assume he doesn't have an SERT, and like you said, if he removes the side cover, or seat and there's no PC, then it's probably a stock ECU. Without some type of tuning device, you can do a dyno pull, but you can change anything, that's what I was trying to say. Might have an ECU flash.

Dan, I got 6hp over the canned map, at 5,000' not to bad.

A while back I had my 07 (PC111) Tuned at the HD shop after SE251 cam install. Ran well at WOT but had a few flat spots. Just had it re tuned here in Campbell Ca, at Horse power express. A 250 point tune, new plugs and wires (33K) and fuel pressure check, $600. A bit high but she runs much better now. Also gained 8 hp and 5 fpt to 106 hp and 112 tq.  At $75 per 1 hp I guess I can't complain. I am just glad it runs smoother though

Gents:

Thanks for all your posts.  For whatever is worth, the HD shop did a $200 download/tune/map (not sure how you call it but it was not a race tune nor a full dyno run).  Needless to say, they threw it in for free after fixing the oil leak problem and she really runs great.  Which is good as even at $400-$600, not really sure I wanted to go that route.   I was more concerned about a healthy running engine, no popping, backfire, etc and its really worked out well.  Linear power curve.  Better running than initially.   I am surprised at how smooth my SERK runsactually. But someday if I do go that route for a full dyno, race tune, etc I'll know where to go, what to do.   Thanks much !
