Time for an oil change.
« on: July 26, 2009, 09:22:36 AM »

As a supporter of Mobile 1 20-50 in the past, I have decided to make a change in my fluids.
I don't believe there is anything wrong with the Mobile 1 but these 110's run so hot!
So time for a change.

Not sure, have to wait and see.
Redline makes 20-50 that I could go to.
Time will tell, , , , and heat.

One problem Chip.  When the fluids are all different colors it's easy to tell what's leaking.  Now how you going to know :huepfenlol2: ?

Chip

I switched to Redline Shockproof in the tranny at your suggestion and agree that it works very well.  I am curious to find out how the Redline oil works & if it produces any temperature drop so please keep us posted!

BTW,  The Tail of the Dragon sticker / painted logo  on the rear fender in the photo looks sharp!  :2vrolijk_21:

cheers!

Thanks Monty!

I have used the shockproof in the transmission for a year or more but the engine oil change is a direct result of having a hot 110.

Is the Redline Heavy Shockproof or V-Twin Tranny oil really that much better than Amsoil 75-140 Severe Gear?

I started using the Redline 20/50 on my trip back from Phoenix and i find it to be excellent. Have used the Redline HD Shockproof in Tranny and the MTL in Primary form any years, its all worked great.

Have also used Mobil V Twin and like it to.

In Canada it is difficult to purchase Redline products and Mobil V Twin a reasonable prices, I usually pick u a case when I am in Phoenix. Once in a while Wally World in the US has Mobil V Twin on sale.

It really comes down to personal preference between any of the quality synthetics...  Both Redline and Amsoil are good products - as is Mobil 1 synthetic oil.  I use Redline Heavy Shockproof in the transmission because it is easily available to me and I have a successful history with it.   :nixweiss:

Chip,
What was your oil temp using Mobile1?  I just installed the Oil Temp Guage in my oil pan today and put in Mobile1 VTwin 20-50.  After a 25 mile ride, 15 miles on I-75 at 70-80 MPH my oil temp was right at 230ยบ.  Would be nice to know if Redline 20-60 runs cooler.

Like Scott said, they're both good products. I have never used the Amisol, because I don't have a local supplier, but I can get Redline locally, so I use their products in the trans and primary, really like it.

I had a chat with a Harley tech this morning regarding fluids.  Mainly tranny fluids.  He told me that Harley no longer recommends using 20w50 Syn3 or any other 20w50 synthetic in the tranny.  They recommend the HD Formula+.  Then we got into a discussion on non-Harley products.  The tech indicated that he was currently running Redline Heavy Shockproof in his bike.  But he has previous run Spectro Heavy Duty Gear Oil 75w140 and Amsoil Severe Gear 75w140.  He said they are all good and that he could not tell any noticable difference in the three.

I realize this is one person's opinion but the guy seemed sincere and very open.  Again, a lot boils down to personal preference and personal experience.  Also availablility.  I have Amsoil readily available so I'm going to go that route.
