I always thought so.  Here's the scenario..

My nephew bought a 2007 SE Springer, bought the five year warranty.
He found out recently that his fuel pump gasket under the console was leaking fuel on a full tank and subsequently messed up the paint.

Dealer and Harley rep say that the paint is not covered because it's cosmetic damage??

I would think that if one part fails and damages another, they're liable to fix under warranty.

Am I crazy or do you think there's a way around this crap?

First, the Extended Service Plan (not extended warranty) should spell out exactly what is covered and what isn't.  It doesn't necessarily follow exactly with the original factory warranty.  You need to get hold of an actual copy of the ESP that spells out what is and what isn't covered.  You may find that the fuel pump is covered, but a gasket failure is not.  I don't know that for a fact, but I have seen that sort of distinction in automotive service agreements.

If the gasket is a covered part, then you are absolutely correct in thinking that damage caused by the failure of a covered part should also be covered.  For instance, if a valve keeper failed and allowed the valve to drop and destroy a piston and cylinder, all the damaged parts would be covered if the valve keeper was a covered part.  However, H-D has been getting even cheaper than usual lately and has started using that "cosmetic" argument even on the original factory warranty.  If you find that the gasket failure is covered, stick to your guns and insist that they show you in writing where failure of a covered part doesn't obligate them to repair other parts damaged by that failure.

The ESP is not the same.  The Dealer has to call someone in AZ. to verify the claim.  It's not the same as standing in the SM face to get something covered.  ESP tends to nickel and dime the fixes and a deductible of course.  There's no one looking out for you.  It gives the dealer and even HD someone to hide behind when ESP rejects your claim.

I'll chime in......

My dealership (I will assume others work the same) covers the bike headlight to tail light for 2 years, then the extended warranty kicks in but......... there is a $50.00 charge for every claim made after the 2 year factory warranty.
And yes they are two different plans, the coverage is different.
I agree if one part fails and damages another....they (HD) are responsible! Common sense wouldn't you think?

If they are giving you a hassle, I would fight tooth and nail.

If that gasket falls under the parameters of the warranty your covered.

I would have to say..check with a Lawyer if it comes down to it.

No such thing as an extended warranty.  It's an extended service agreement.  And no, as stated above, it does not cover everything that the factory warranty covers.  The contract for the extended service agreement isn't even with Harley Davidson.  It's with an independant company and the dealership just acts as a sales agent to sale you the extended service plan (they like to refer to it as "extended warranty" but it doesn't say "warranty" anywhere on it.

As stated they are not the same, fine print will kill you. It has been my experience that although on paper it says you have a warranty, most tech support is so poor that you pretty much buy these machines as is

I have had great luck with the extended service plan.. Both on my heritage and SERK.. I think it all has to do with the dealer you service at and how much they will go to bat for you...
