Question on the Garmin 550 Zumo
« on: July 01, 2009, 05:43:27 PM »

I went to Best Buy to get an SD card for the unit and I see they have SDHC cards now.  Will this card also work in the 550?  I want more memory space.  I have heard that is you did an update it should work?

Please be aware the memory card will delay the onset of your map functions; the Zumo will light up as expected however the map, stored routes and MP3 music will all be delayed.  I asked Garmin about maximum SD card size and their recommendation is no larger than 4GB, which is what I have.  It now takes about five minutes for full function operation.  One way around this is to allow the Zumo to stay on battery power when stopped for a break.  I hope this helps.

If you store your musuc files in folders you will speed up the loading process.

I have 8 gig sd card. I have 50 cd's on it with 944 songs.
I don't have the art saved and my music isn't in separate files.
From dead off to fully functional it's less than 1 minute.
I'm not sure why yours could take 5 minutes to load up, but if
varied time is needed to load up and yours leans to a longer time
to do so,  you could try your Ign switch to aux power position and you
could also press you power on switch next to start botton before you start
your bike. This habit could give a moment or two to give the bike a
quick once over before you mount up. When you then turn the Ign switch
to start position you why not interupt the power source to you zumo long
enough to cause it to go into shut down mode as long as you don't go past
30 seconds that is.

good luck
