Howie, people think I'm crazy when I say that same thing.  Actually I've been looking into converting my 06 FLHX.  Its a harness, Ignition module, fuel shutoff, replacing fuel pump/ sending unit, coil, and more plus intake, and carb.

HeHe!!! But what about the non-fuel related stuff the ECM controls? Speedo, signals, cruise....! This could make things even more restrictive in converting to a carb Phil. That's why I'm reluctant to do that right now! But yep, damn computer don't belong on a freakin motorcycle! ;)

I converted to a carb and lost nothing. You'll have to choose a carb with cruise capabilities. I choose a Mikuni with a Rivera cruise bracket. While not super smooth it works well. I didn't pull the fuel pump as it's still in the tank. Pingel makes a conversion to run a petcock. That I would say is the only downside, the petcock sits lower due to the adapter and when it hits reserve it's just about dry!. If I machined a new pickup tube I could solve that. The speedo on my 01 runs off of the trans, no issues there (not sure about your year).

The mechanical stuff's no problem Mike. Your bike was offered in a non-CVO carb model and is easy to convert. So much on the newer bikes goes thru the ECM now. Speedo would need to be changed, and hard-wired indicator lamps need be installed. It could get pretty labor intensive and costly to convert these new bikes to carb. Anything can be done, but at what cost? Best I try to fix it. HD Tech's coming in tomorrow night again with the DT. They'll get a new ECM on Fri if that's it. They also plan on replacing the MAP, Crank Position, and Cyl Head Temp sensors (which I always carry with me) at Jim's recommendation. Hopefully I'll know more tomorrow evening! ;)

Actually I wemt thru the parts book, page by page my FLHX was available with a carb.  Main Harness, coil, ignition module, intake manifold and carb, fuel vavle and a few mods to the fuel pump hoses, etc should be all that's needed. MAP sensor and temp stay, as well as ECM.

TODAY'S UPDATE:

Well, this is a new one to me. Anyone hear this before? The NSMC and HD Techs determined that the WRONG sending unit is being used on Cybil, and that's why the gas gauge hasn't worked. The unit shown in the SERK Parts Manual appears to have the incorrect P/N and this part must be special ordered directly from HD. It seems there are 2 type sending units, but both show the same P/N. I gave them Jenni's number for them to order the correct part. She confirmed this with Artie, and has to call the factory now to find out what to do!

WTF? Anyone ever hear this before. I can't be the first in the world to need a SERK3 fuel sending unit! This is really bullchit! FTF!!! >:(

They also said the running issue does not appear to be the ECM after checking it last night. After Artie gets the parts to repair the gas gauge, he'll put the whole FP assembly back together and troubleshoot exactly what's bad. He sees some wiring issues, and wants to test some sensors. He wants to know EXACTLY what's causing it, and not just change parts at random til it's fixed.

At this point, I'm very satisfied with his response to me, and he seems to be VERY thorough in his troubleshooting approach. Him and I are personal friends, and we also work together at our regular jobs. So I'm OK with this and trust his response to me this morning at this point. I'll be patiently waiting for some good news within the next few days (I hope so anyway)!

Manufacturers used to make parts that were the same for 10 years, now they change designs in 10 weeks.

It is good to know that he wants to know what the real problem/fix is.

Thanks for all the ideas gang! :2vrolijk_21:

TODAY'S UPDATE:

What might cause this? Always look at the simplest things first! So not wanting to just change parts until it got fixed, Artie wanted to know EXACTLY what was wrong with it. So he went thru the things he wanted to check, one by one. The HD Tech checked the ECM the other night and it was fine. So Artie today went thru troubleshooting the problem today. No, not a sensor! No, not the TSM! No, not any of the electronics, or related to the faulty gas gauge! What was it you ask? ??? ??? ???

A BAD SPARK PLUG WIRE!!! :D :D :D

I suspected that when changing the plugs helped it the first time it F'd up! I picked up new plugs and SE WIRES while in Binghamton, but didn't wann lift the damn tank and change em on the road! DOPEY f$%*! Stop being so damn lazy!!!I'm glad it was something that simple though and not gremlins in the electrical system!!! ::) ::) ::) :wall: :wall: :wall:

There seems to be some discomboobulation regarding the HD P/N for the SERK sending unit. They think we keep getting the wrong one as they pulled one from another SERK and it appears to be different from the one ordered from the SERK Parts Manual. They told me they have the 2 to show me the difference with, and they special ordered the other one from HD. But I'll let them go thru this routine since nothing else has been able to get this gauge working again. Maybe they're on to something. We shall see! :nixweiss:

The primary's making some noise Vern says. Not surprised as I know the clutch was going. I have the new Rivera ProClutch sitting there to be put into Cybil anyway! So he's pulling the primary cover on Mon to see what's making the noise in there. He'll change the clutch at that point anyway, and resolve anything else that he might find in there. But we suspect it's just the clutch, so no harm, no foul there. At least I hope so anyway! ;)

Crap.  That first time we talked I misunderstood.  Thought you'd already changed the wires.  He's right on one thing for sure.  Troubleshooting needs to be easiest/cheapest first.

HeHe!!! I bought em! But just never changed em, since I brought the bike in immediately after Niagara. Went completely overboard on diagnosing the problem because we did all those things right before the trip! DOPE!!! :wall: :wall: :wall: ;)
