FIRST IMPRESSIONS.....
« on: July 19, 2009, 10:04:13 AM »

Well boys and girls, I have just over 200 miles on the new '09 SERG O/B.

At this point I can say that it rides smoother then the '08 SERK I traded in and it seems to handle the curves in a more authoritative manner than my '08 SERK.

Obviously with lack of a windshield, the air to the wife is bothering her quite a bit, but for me, the direct air is tons better than the buffeting I'd been having with the SERK because of a too short windshield.  I was somewhat gusty here yesterday and on the same road under very similar circumstances with both bikes, the SERG is like its on rails without ANY side to side bouncing around.

As far as what little I've "gotten" on it so far, because of the lack of break in, it seems by the seat of my pants to be just as responsive or better than my "tuned" SERK.

With the radio now on the SERG, I can say that I'm not too anxious to make it a whole bunch louder than stock, especially the way it runs right now, it's great......

I did read about the shock air pressure and before I read about it, I had used the SERK settings from my memory, but the SERG has a higher psi level and I think for two up we need to go up to about 50 psi.  On the SERK 30 was all that was needed.  Granted, Progressive or some other aftermarket shock brand would be even better, but comparing apples to apples, the SERG is still better than the SERK in ride comfort.

My wife is going to a Card's game today so I'll be doing some solo riding to get more miles on it.  I'll wring it out a bit more today on the curves to get a better feel of it.

But so far, I like it.... I like it lots!!!!!!!

Oh, the dealership did the recall on the rear wheel and mine was NOT one of the 125 double heat treated wheels.  I was afraid that I would go in yesterday and they would tell me that I had to wait to ride the NEW bike because they needed to replace the rear wheel, but I'm good to go.

Actually the "start" date on the recall is not till 07-20-9, so that's probably why some of the dealerships did not hear about this as early as some others.  In fact my NEW dealership did not have any of the codes to allow him to enter the warranty labor just because it was not officially launched as a recall yet.  He keep all the info and will do an entry tomorrow to get the labor back etc.

Good luck to the rest of you guys with the affected VIN's.

Ride on guys and gals.....

2009 SERG is my sixth Harley, my third RoadGlide, had the Ultra Barge, and the 07 SERK, to me the RoadGlide has always been the best handling of the FL series. Good Luck, Be Safe

Traded in my 08 RK anniv edition for my O/B SERG.  Lovin' every minute of it too.  Glad you're not on the recall list.

I'm very happy with my Cee Bailey's windscreen, but if you order one, I would suggest 1 to 2" taller than they recommend on their website.  I now have the stock, Klock Werks and the CB.  KW looks the best by far IMO, but CB is easily the best at reducing buffetting on my wife (and me).  Good luck finding the right one, but I'll put my two cents in for CB dark smoked screen.

If your thighs get too hot, the best $70 I have spent so far is on Kyurakan heat sheilds, and I installed them in about 20 minutes.  Even my wife noticed a huge difference in heat under her thighs.

The windvest is so much better than the CB or KW. the 10 inch looks hot rod and doesn't have the the jet stream buffeting. You get air but it is smooth. I haven't tried the 12 inch but I bet it even better yet. :2vrolijk_21:

I've owned a SERK, then a SEEG and now the 09 SERG.  With each bike I said it was great and a tremendous improvement from the previous HD's.  However, I have to agree that the SERG is hands down my favorite bike for both short, along the coast rides as well as the longer distance rides.

Re: windshields...I have a 12" KW and while it is ok, I'm still looking for the perfect windshield.  Most interested in finding something for the long distance rides and then can interchange with the KW.  In the meantime, the KW is much better than the stock unit.  Trying to figure out if my D & D pipes are drowning out the stereo at high speeds....or it is the KW....or should I step up to Hawg Tunes.  One thing this forum is never short of is someone's opinion.  That's what makes this forum so good.

Enjoy the ride.  Get those break in miles on and then see how strong that RG can really be.

I had the KW and got a Cee Bailey.  I like it much better while keeping the style.  Of course the Clearview would be the best but....  The looks would suffer.  BTW, I have a Clearview in my other RG and love it but this is the SERG>>>>>>

sblair, how is the air flow to the passenger?  My wife was complaining that she couldn't hear me when I was trying to yell at her about things while we rode.  Even with the SERK and the less than desirable windshield that had, she was still some out of the wind and could hear me talking without a lot of problems.

You're exactly correct, this IS a SERG....

But I have to satisfy the wife a bit too.

Man oh man, everybody has strong feelings about what they use and they all use different windshields.

I'll go back the windshield thread and look at pictures of all the different options and then see what the most recommended shield might be.  As I have said before, I tend to sit VERY high in the saddle in relationship to my height.  Although I'm 5'-13", I sit like someone 5'-16", so a slightly taller windshield might be in order.  Does height effect the BSR and their wind?

Thanks to all here again for the valuable information.

Dan Lockwood, yes the height affects BSR and their wind greatly, according to my wife.  My preference for in-town and short rides is the KW 12" becasue of the sweet look (dark smoked color) - it looks better than stock and provides some air deflection.  On anything over 30-45 minute trips though, my CB 15" is MUCH better and doesn't make the SERG look like the front end of a Gold Wing with an oversized windscreen.  My wife loves the CB, and if I had to order again, I might get a 16" even though their measurements call for me to get a 14".  Plus, CB will refinish if it pits from bugs/rocks for as long as you own it, they claim.

Unfortunately, the windscreens may be the most variable option you can add, with every screen being different for every rider, even if they are the same height.  It is definitely a personal decision and doesn't matter a hill of beans what others experience, from what I've seen.  I just wish there was a way to try them all before dropping $200-500 on one.

I hear the best about CB and windvest of all the ones I've seen posts on and guys I've talked to for overall performance and look.

Sem,

Do you actually switch windshields when you ride?  I would think that would be a lot of work.

Charles, I can swap screens in about 10-15 minutes total time to remove and replace.  I have only swapped them twice because most of our riding has been highway lately.  When we get past the Sturgis ride starting this Saturday, I will probably be swapping them a bit more often.  The CB and KW both install and remove easily.  I like that CB uses the stock rubber strip for install to, keeps it a bit more firm IMO.  Still greatly prefer the look of KW though and it works fine when I'm by myself or we aren't doing much riding over 60 mp.
