Newby Question Stage one
« on: July 30, 2009, 09:29:41 PM »

Guys:
Waiting until August 10th for my FHX and I have a few questions about the SE 110.  What are the pipes like and how does it breath stock? My 03 RK was a much better bike after Stage one - Do I need to let the 110 "breath" as well? If so do I need to also change the pipes?

I can only guess that you are talking about a 2010 FLHXSE Street Glide when you mentioned FHX and SE110.  The stock head pipes are 2 into 1 into 2 and it's a pretty decent setup, but there are catalytic converters located inside the headpipes.  If you would like to remove them, there are threads with illustrations on how to get rid of them.  It's either that or replace them with pipes from a standard 96" non-California motor...or replace them with an aftermarket system.  If you retain the stock pipes with CATs removed or go with the 96" pipes, you will still want to replace the mufflers (most likely), or again replace the entire system.  I'm not sure what the air cleaner setup is on that bike, but my guess would be that you will want to replace it with something to allow the engine to breathe more.  Assuming you do all of that, you will still need a tuning device such as the SE Super Tuner or TTS Mastertune or similar device and have the bike dynotuned depending on what tuner you choose.  The bike will come lean from the factory and it will need to add fuel to the mixture(richen it) and that will help the bike run cooler.  That's a quick synopsis of the changes you will likely want to make, with the assumption that if you asked about this stuff, you are probably someone that will be wanting to make the changes.  There is a lot more detail available throughout different posts in the forum for you to explore, which may help clue you in to exactly what specific changes you will want to make or specific brands that you may want to consider.  I should also mention that regarding the mufflers, you will find that a healthy number of people on here have used the stock mufflers and gutted them and put in Fulsac baffles.  Not knowing what your tastes are concerning loudness of pipes, etc., it's difficult to really make any suggestions at this point.

Thanks, my plan is to get the bike and put on a few k on it before I decide. I have never heard an SE 110 or felt it so I have no baseline as a said the 88 stock to stage one was night and day and I put SE pipes in it.  I am starting to get a little impatient waiting for the thing I can tell you that. All I hear about it how great the Spiced Rum color is and its here now. I ordered the Blue (fastest color) and I got it at MSRP so waiting I am... Interesting regarding pricing. I got four prices, two were 4k over MSRP+ freight and setup, one was 2k + again the Freight and setup (about 1k) and the last price up in the mountains of NH near my cabin was MSRP period! Very happy to do business locally as well, pays to call / look around.

I went through that crap last year.  I found 2 SE Ultras at one dealer, when noone else around here had any and they wanted MSRP + $4k.  I politely let them know that there wasn't enough vaseline available to keep that deal from ripping me a new one, and that without buying me dinner and flowers first, it was an insult that they even tried to screw me.  The next week, I found one at my local dealer for MSRP minus $59.50.  Yes, $59.50 off...don't ask how that number was determined.   :nixweiss:  Luckily for me, they even had the real fastest color...Ruby Red, so that's what I took home with me.

+1 on the Ruby I heard that as well.

Regarding shopping for a bike. Any one out to buy a bike like an SE  is not at their first rodeo. I find the dealer mentality interesting and this is a little hard to say but some of these sales guys are just kids -  they have very little depth of knowledge compared to a long time rider (or even a short term rider). I asked about the 2010 motor and the history of top end leakage  and they really had no clue. The two shops that quoted the highest where closest to town and are the largest and - real big places. The second was a medium large dealer and the shop I made the purchase at is very small. I had to tell them to call Harley and demand they get at SE Road Glide with AMEX in hand. I don't think they expected to be allocated even one of these bikes. Harley corporate came through (as they should) and suppported the local dealer.
