jiffy stand play
« on: July 15, 2009, 06:45:22 AM »

how much forward to back play is in your jiffy stand?  My bike can move at least a couple of inches forward to back and the jiffy stand seems like the part that goes to the ground can move several degrees without moving the piece that is supposed to lock it into it's bracket.  I did not notice this on my '07 but my '09 appears to have a slightly different kickstand.

I believe the kickstand is different....it's shorter then my 06, and harder to get too with your foot.

But I also believe the bike is longer, may not be by much but I do remember hearing that.

I have quite a bit of fore and aft movement as well....nature of the beast. As long as it's in the slot you should have no problem with it giving out.

The is quite a "wiggle" with the '09 Touring frames. No need to worry, all is safe. You should, however, know (if you don't already) that the very early production of the '09's were delivered with a too short kickstand. Several people got their's changed at no cost.

Ride safely,

stopped by my dealer...service department says the cam is bad on the kickstand.  they ordered me a new one and advised parking on more level ground until it is replaced...good idea... a friends bike has about 1/2 the play of mine, so there does seem to be an issue with mine...

the dealer said he has noticed a couple of these so far this year with the '09 touring family...I will know and understand alot more after taking it apart.  I am guessing at this time that there is a square on the top of the stand that must go into a square hole on the retaining piece which is then bolted down with a flat and lock washer and bolt.  I cannot see, without taking the bolt out what exactly is happening to mine, but if the square piece or square hole were beginning to go out of square or perhaps twist, that could be the problem.

he is the one who used the term cam, which as you can tell is considerably better than my description

I'll let you know once it is taken apart.

I just had it happen tonight, where a neighbor ran to my bike to catch it when he saw the bike moving into the locked position on the jiffy stand.  I just laughed as I was telling him it's okay.  I was actually sitting on the bike when it was moving into place.  He has a Goldwing and he just didn't understand.

I can't think of a single valid reason why H-D leaves all that free play in their jiffy stand, other than not having any confidence in their ability to maintain close tolerances.  Next time you have your bike on a center stand, jack, or lift, take the jiffy stand and pull it into the down position.  Grasp the end and pull up to engage the little cam in the slot in the bracket, and make note of the huge amount of clearance between the front edge of that cam and the bracket.  Why do they need a quarter inch of slop?

I have to agree with that statement.......SLOP.

It makes it much harder to tell when it's bad as described by hdctss.

As most of us think this play is normal, I was glad to hear he went to the dealer and found out the Cam was bad.

This just makes me more conscious of what I should be looking for.

I've never had mine apart to see how they really function, but I assumed the "slop" allows you to put your jiffy stand down and miss slightly, yet still have it catch.  I thought it allowed us to be a little less precise in putting it the entire way down, and still have your bike left standing.  I guess I just always thought that it was a safety feature.  Now you guys seem to be aiming toward lack of precision on the MOCO's part.  Which is it?

Some slop yes for the reasons you stated, how much before failure is the real question.

All I can say is that the Touring model stands have more than double the amount of play that my Dyna had, and I never had a problem with the Dyna not being locked in.  Some amount of play is necessary, but I think the amount on the Touring models is excessive.

All I know is that I am very careful every single time I put the jiffy stand down and make sure it's locked in place.  I became very alert to this after being thrown head first into a cement block wall last year off my Road King.  I though the jiffy stand was down and when I went to get off, the bike continued down and forced me into the wall.  I must have a very hard head, since I suffered no injuries, but it was quite a scare.  Ever since, I have been extremely cautious with the jiffy stand.
