Dealer replaced 2nd cuped 407 at NC$
« on: July 31, 2009, 12:55:41 PM »

I picked up my bike yesterday from my local dealer and they actually exceeding my expectations. They replaced the rear wheel from a scratch that they put on it while replacing the tire. (another nail)  They actually admitted that they did it and apologised for any inconvenience. While they were doing the wheel I told them not to put the weights on as I was going with the Dyna Beads I read about on this forum. I told them that while I was at another dealership I complained about my front tire starting to cup at just 3K miles, it was replaced at no charge like ASAP. Well the front now had 7,500 and was cupping again. When I picked up the bike he replaced the gas trim ring because it was loose and chipped. They also put the new 408 front tire on it. It balanced perfectly so they didn't put any weights on it but I'm going to put the Beads in anyway. I don't know what caused my service guy to do an about face but I let him know I appreciated his attention to detail. It was apparent he was very concerned about my satisfaction.
Sometimes I think they pull this stuff just to keep me confused!

Now I only have to get rid of the HD map they downloaded and get the TTS SERT upgrade installed. Steve Cole from TTS actually called the service manager to discuss the upgrade. I'm hoping to have things settled within a week or so. The way we are getting rain up here in the North East riding time is at a premium.

Glad to hear you are happy with the dealer.  Which was it Heritage?

It rained big time here.  What are you up to tomorrow?

Hi Phil,

The first dealer to remove the 407 was Laconia HD, there was another guy that had about the same milage (3K) complaining about his tire. I overheard Lee Manning from customer service tell the guy we will take of you right now, I asked him that included me. He looked at my cupped tire and said why the hell not. Heritage did the second tire which now has the 408, so we will see what this tire does. I have been in the animal riding mode as of late and had better start to take it easy. I have been pushing it on weekdays up North riding at near or beyond my skill level. I lifted my SERK with the 13" Bitubo's and I'm still grinding the hell out of my floor boards. The arm holding the True Track to the Baker Pan is almost ground off and I usually don't take right hand cornres as hard as lefties. Did flattracking for awhile so going left is natural. I had to promised Renee that I would take it easy for awhile. The only thing I need now is to have the TTS installed and I'll be back to a much shorter back tire life span.

Sorry I got your message so late, I rode to Vermont all day on Saturday, love the country but hate the Helmet. We left early and got home at 6:00PM only to have two of my boys tell me they were picking me up to go Striper fishing at Plum Island at 7:00 PM. I got home at 4:35 in the morning. I was planning to go to the 10:30 Mass but we ended up babysitting all day. My 2 1/2 year old grandson Aidan just wiped me out, at least we got a nap in together and then it was back on the 4 wheeler. Life has been great, now if we can do something about this rain. Renee works in Concord so I pick her up at 3:30 and head up North as often as we can. Going again on Tuesday. I should be home everyday except Tuesday and Friday. been thinking of planning a 2 or 3 day ride with the wife before the summer is gone, any ideas?

If you ever make it out here you can take the 61 Pan out for a spin, it's been running great, starts near every time on first kick. I have it listed on Chopper Exchange. I really screwed up 2 weeks ago by taking the BMW 1300 out for a test ride. What a machine, just what the Doctor ordered for my spine.

Tire cupping is just as the name implies, it has uneven wear rotating from side to side. It's an unnatural premature wear of the tire. You end up replacing the tire with plenty of thread left due to the wear from the middle to the sides. To me it looks like a person was whittling on it with a large pocket knife.  Somebody can probably explain it better than I can.

Glad to hear you are riding the p*ss out of it.  That's what they are for.  We'll get together soon.

I was glad my dealer took good care of me on the tires.  First one lasted about 5k miles and was cupped bad they replaced it with a 2nd 407 as the 408's weren't out yet, 3k miles later on the 2nd 407 tire it had started to was cup again and they swapped it out for the 408.

Is there an official replacement plan for the 407's or is it isolated and up to how happy your dealer wants to keep you?   Also what are Dyna beads?

Dynabeads are used in the tire for balance rather than weights on the wheel.
I am planning on trying them out at the next tire change.
I have not heard one person with a negative comment after using the Dynabeads.
Is there anybody who has tried the beads who did not like the results?  I would like to get the scoop before I go for the beads.

the tire replace issues with the 407's are on the MOCO. Dunlop warned HD before they ever came out. HD said it was an asthetics thing. so if your dealer wants to replace, let'm go for it.
Do research on these beads before you commit

An example of a tire cupping in a picture would help here
