Low speed front end wobble............
« on: September 10, 2009, 07:24:13 PM »

 :cherry:
On a few occassions,  I have noticed a scary wobble while negotiating very slow speeds in gas stations or other getting ready to park kinda deals.  The first time I noticed it,  I stopped and checked everything on the front end and found nothing loose.  At any speed above 4 or 5 mph,  I did not notice it.  At highway speed,  no problems at all and smooth as can be.

Today,  while getting gas,  I noticed it again and my conclusion is this........I'm thinking the rubber bushing that isolate the handlebars might be loose or they are softer and more pliant (give more) than those on my prior Road King. :nixweiss:

Anyone else ever notice such a deal. ::)

Many a steering head have needed adjustment for just such a problem as you describe. See http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=40902.msg627895#msg627895

I've had them kind of 'low speed' wobbles after about 4-5 beers  ;D, and preferably a ice cold Blue Moon in an frozen iced beer mug.  :drink:

now on a serious note,, you might want to check the preload on the steering head bearings. The check must be done with bike sitting a a center stand jack where the front end can move left-right freely, no obstructions. The test procedure is spelled out in the manual or maybe somewhere here. I think this is a common problem, my third owned Harley, a 2001 Road King had this same problem and was easily fixed by adjusting the steering head preload.  :2vrolijk_21:

When I had that issue on my bike it turned out to be loose neck bearings. Once they were tightend up it was fine.

Also check your air pressure in the front tire.
