O2 Sensors and race tuners
« on: September 30, 2009, 10:31:00 PM »

To the Harley Knowledgeable...

My understanding is that the new 2010 exhaust O2 sensors are heated narrow band sensors.  Thundermax uses wide band sensors for its autotune capability.  I was trying to find info on the SERT and which sensors it needs.  Does anyone know if the SERT can use existing O2 sensors or do they need to be swapped out as well?

THe HD SERT works with the new sensors.  Info from my tech at my dealer.

I'm sure the the PC V with Autotune will figure out a way to make it work.  HD made it harder with the smaller O2 sensors.

If you want wide band capability you have to go with software cabable of reading the wide band sensor signals and you must have wide band sensors installed in your exhaust bongs . SERT will not do this. However you can piggy back a Daytona Twin Tech Twin Scan to your SERT and get all the functions and tuning capability you need. This set up is very close to a wide band auto tune, but a manual process. I've been using this set up for years and love it..

Here is some information on the Twin Tech. http://www.daytona-sensors.com/Twin_Scan2.html

 :)

Sounds good.

Do the O2 sensors have the same size hole as the old ones on the 09's?

Stock 2010 sensors are different in size/mounting than the 2009. Function is the same, except now they are heated and are "on line" quicker.

I think the 2010 sensors are installed in a non-preferred location for Wide Band use. Wide Band sensors should be placed within a few inches from the exhaust port at the head. I believe the new Lambda sensor(s) are placed right at the end of the header pipe several inches from the exhaust port. I am not sure what the mounting hole size is on the Lambda sensor. You may want to call Chris Schroder  at DTT and ask him what your options are for the 2010 models. Make sure to tell him your installing for 'off road' use, otherwise he gets nervous about the EPA laws. Also, I'm not sure if the new 2010 ECM modules will still let you adjust for AFR vs. Lambda or both, something to ask Chris or maybe someone with knowledge on this can ping in  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

O2 sensor placement is important for any system. Just picking a spot and installing them does not always work. If they are too close tot he head you can overheat them and too far away and they will run too cold. Over heating them will ruin them and to cold means they will not come on line. HD has had issue with short overall life of sensors due to the vibrations and sensor placement so with the 2010 DBW bike the sensors were moved away from the head and a heater added. This solve the slow light off times and the overheat issue all at one time.

The cheap Bosch sensor used for most aftermarket wide band kits will not fit in the 2010 DBW O2 positions so you will need to weld in new bungs into the exhaust to use them. They will fit in all the other models but you can and do run into the overheat and vibration conditions at that location. Useing them to tune the bike and then removing them is the best thing to do.

Sounds like there are no wide band heated sensors that will fit the 2010 pipe locations.  I wonder why HD didn't use the more standard bung size...maybe space constraints.
