allen plug under engine case
« on: December 13, 2009, 01:12:49 PM »

When I was changing the oils in my 08 I noticed an allen plug on the right side of the oil pan.  I only have the owners manual to go by, but it said not to touch it.  I thought it was part of the trans oil pan.  Can anyone tell me what it's for?

Are you asking about the plugs in the engine case or the oil pan?  The post asks about the oil pan so might as well start there.

If you're referring to the horizontal plug to the right of the normal oil drain plug it's a point used in machining the pan.  No other OE use I've ever seen.  Many use that hole to mount a temperature sending when installing an oil temp gauge though.  If asking about the vertical plug in the bottom of the pan and even more to the right that is the drain for the transmission oil.

There's also a plug in the bottom of the right engine case (at least on some years).  Never use that one unless needing to drain the cases for some reason.

Thanks.  I Mistakenly took the vertical allen plug out, about 2 shot glasses of oil came out then I put it back in when I noticed the oil drain plug for the tans.  I changed the engine, trans and primary oils ( used redline).  Does it make a difference if some oil came out of that hole even though I changed all the fluids?

p.s. I used the horizontal allen plug to install the oil temp sending unit.  The illustrations on this sight were extemely
helpful. Thanks!
