110' CVO Engine mods - advice sought
« on: November 06, 2009, 07:23:27 AM »

Now then, my girls going in shortly to have a factory recall on the heads, so I might as well get the mods done then (the factory can pay for the pull down and re-assembly and I can pay for the new gear fitment.)

Can you guys provide me with some heads up on the gear I am going to need (I want to stick to genuine SE gear)

Item                                                              Type                         Part Number
Cams                                                     SE-255              25638-07
SCREAMIN’ EAGLE ROLLER ROCKER ARMS                             17378-98
SCREAMIN’ EAGLE TAPPETS                                                           18572-07
SCREAMIN' EAGLE Pushrods   option A                                                        18404-08
SCREAMIN' EAGLE Pushrods   option B                                                        18402-03

What else will I need. I know I'll need a larger carby, but I was hoping to get it at a later date.

Any advice and addition of other parts would be appreciated. DO I need to add a race tuner as well, is there anything else I need?

Cheers

Why use the stock cam? I'd use the SE 251 before putting that 255 back in.

Why use SE lifters. The stock lifters should be fine.

The SE adjustable tapered PR's should work fine. Your bike came with a 46mm TB. I'd be changing that to the SE 50MM, with a free flowing air cleaner assembly and a GOOD free flowing exhaust.

AussieCVO,

If the bike were mine unless I was going with a cam over 600 lift I would not use roller rockers.   It is a Cruising bike, I want the quiet.  I would NEVER use the Screaming Eagle Lifters under any circumstance.  The HD 99b's or S&S lifters would be my choice and in that order.

If you are choosing to use the SE pushrods I would recommend either tapered pushrods or the perfect fit if you are using a SE Cam that has them.

You may want to send off your 46 mm throttlebody to Horsepower Inc and have it enlarged over buying a 50mm, of course that is provided your location and shipping arent intrusive.

If you are staying all harley you may want to talk with Hard10 he did the 251 cam and no headwork.  Here is a link to his dyno.

AussieCVO,

If you have not already I would look at installing Torrington Bearings.

if your not going to raise the compression, i wouldn't use a cam with more than a 36 intake close... HQ500 is a favorite in a stock 110... the SE204 might work well too... if u go with the 10.5 pistons, then use the SE251/259 cam... (259 replaces both the 251 and 257)... i thought the 110 motors came with the 50mm TB? i just checked the SE catalog, it says the 58mm is 8mm bigger than the stock FBW TB... so all FBW bikes have the 50 already...

OK..wow there's a fair bit involved.

With this in mind, is worth while doing the mods, allowing for the fact that these engines have such a severe overheating issue?

In many ways I'm happy with the engine as it is, what I am after is the chance to modify the engine to make it not work so hard and thus provide me with an engine that will "hopefully" last for many years.

I bought this bike with a view of keeping it for a fair period of time.

The ministress of War and financial affairs would be happier also if I were not to drain the bank account as well.  ::) ;)

Cheers

Ausie
You don't need any of the parts listed and they will do no good to enhance performance. If you want to lower the heat go with a SE259E cam and HD perfect fit pushrods but understand that doing so will require a custom tune and will cost some punch right off the line until the motor reaches 2,300. Use the SEST (assuming your dealer /installer is educated in it's use) and slightly richen the closed loop areas of the program plus dyno tune to get the rest back in order. A good pipe is needed when performance cams such as this are used and that needs to be in order.
