Engine Shutdown More Clarity(FIXED)
« on: October 21, 2009, 09:58:23 AM »

I have had several engine shutdowns which happen once or twice a month when I'm riding. I just started noticing when I back the bike up in neutral and turn the handle bars the engine coughs and shuts down. It also does it when I make a u-turn to the right the motor tries to shutdown and sometimes it does. I'm wondering now if this problem when backing up and turning the handle bars is the same problem area that is causing the engine to shutdown when I'm on the freeway and all of a sudden the motor shuts down??????????? I'm thinking that it's in the handle bars and it's the wiring for the start shudown switch. As many times as Ive had the heated grips replaced I'm thinking that they have hosed my wire harness up?? Any feed back on this issue??

Sounds like wiring either in handlebars or headlight area. Do you looks lights or gauges? Try wiggling the wiring in the headlight housing see if you can cause the problem to reoccur.

Plenty of potential problems.  Kill switch wiring, anything around it, anything around the ignition switch; basically anything that moves up there that might impact the engine running.  Just have to start opening it up and look.  It's time to be methodical, without prejudging a cause and simply start at one side and work your way through until it's all been looked at, tugged on or otherwise isolated.

Look at this link and scroll down to the schematic and if any of this chit doesn't work the engine will shut down. In my case it was the heat sensor. Good luck. Doc

Well I just got Kasper back last night and the Harley Boys at Tucson Harley fixed my engine shutdown issue. I had two open wires in my main harness that they found under the shielding that had come apart. Not sure how it kept running but only in a tight right turn would it shut the motor down everytime. I also had a ABS light that stayed on all the time and they ended up replacing the wheel sensor to fix that problem. All covered under warranty. This was one of my better trips into the dealer and Kasper now is running like a champ!! I also had the front forks serviced with H.D. Screaming Eagle Oil and what a differance that made to the front end!! Never realized how bad the forks were until I had it serviced!!
