Should I Change the Rear Tire Also???
« on: November 27, 2009, 12:26:22 AM »

I am soon to bring in my '09 SEUC for replacement(at MOCO expense) of the front D407 tire due to cupping. Should I also replace the rear tire at the same time (at my expense). The bike has 5000 miles on it and the rear tire looks OK. What is the opinion of the knowlegable site members out there??
Thanks.

Why throw away a tire that's probably only about half gone?  Dealer isn't likely to charge you any less for changing it now rather than waiting to change it when it's used up.

Make sure you run tire pressure at "Max" cold setting, You probably will get another 5-6k mi left on rear tread.

If the tire is still in good condition keep it and ride on. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for the all the responses, "ride on" it is, and I will be paying close attention to the D408 / D407 combo. My perpetual love / hate HD relationship will continue on!
Thanks again.

It's kind of the opposite of what we've all grown accustomed to.  We're used to replacing a rear tire 2 to 3 times before replacing the front.    Once you get the new one on the front, my experience tells me that once again, you'll have to replace the front after every two rear tires, but because of the cupping problem on the original front tire, it needs replaced prematurely.  Anyway, no need to toss a good rear tire in the pile.  Just replace the front and ride on with the rear until it needs replaced.

Dealer just replaced my front tire at 8400 miles.  Uneven tire wear was causing front end wobble on deceleration.  Checked fall away on neck bearings, and it was good.  Tire replacement was free, including labor.  Rear tire still looks good.  My guess would be at least another 5000 left on rear.

No parts in yet for fuel tank mount recall, but he will call me when they come in.

I'd run the rear, no use wasting a good tire.
