Our brothers in Baltimore City had a close call the other night
« on: January 16, 2010, 10:49:59 AM »

This was a basement fire in a row house.

There is already a crew that has taken a hoseline in the front door (you can see it on the ground) all the way to the rear to the kitchen. They are searching for the interior basement stairs.
There is also a crew with a hoseline accessing the rear exterior stairwell to the basement

This video shows what a real "backdraft" or "smoke explosion" looks like. Probably more dramatic then what you see in the movies. That is the chief officer in the white coat directing operations right in the middle of the video. There is no special effects here

Basement fires are among the scariest and most dangerous of fires we encounter in residential fires, as you have to "go down the chimney" (stairwell) to get to the basement.

"Five firefighters were hurt in the flashover One remains hospitalized in stable condition. Two other were hurt during overhaul. Four more firefighters with less serious injuries were taken to other hospitals and are also in stable condition" (there is some discussion as to whether this was a flashover or smoke explosion 2 different animals to us).

There was an equal blowout out the rear of the structure

There are a couple of warning signs Dave for either a flashover or backdraft (2 different animals). But the fact remains, conditions can change so rapidly that sometimes it just sneaks up on you.
Besides the attack crew keeping their senses about them, we depend on the "outside" people to keep their eyes and ears open for warning signs.

But - you can see in the video that even a well trained aggressive department like Baltimore can get caught.

We had one in my town last year that blew part of the wall of to a 3 story townhouse out. And when it did it dropped a rafter across one of the guys legs as he was crawling out, trapping him for a few minutes. He was lucky, was able to "rescue" himself and was then out of work for 7-8 months.

Not hardly. The real incident commander would be no where near the front of the building. We run 2 BFC's on all of our boxes. The second BFC takes the inside, with full gear and scba along with his aide.

Baltimore has been facing terrible cuts by the Piece of CHIT Mayor that just resigned because of her corrupt A$$. She was killing that department. I did talk to a very good friend of mine who was on that fire. Not good at all. It is a shame we are treated like we are by these Politicians.
