New headers without tuning
« on: February 03, 2010, 05:37:38 PM »

Anybody ever changed out your headers (or removed cats) without doing any race tuning of any type?  Just curious as I had a mechanic tell me it was worth a try.  He did say you would know almost instantly if it would work or not.

I ran mine for a few months without tuning. Sounds good, but You don't realize how anemic the bike runs and how much heat the additional leanness adds. The bike has so much to gain with a good tune. I'm sure any one who has "normalized the AFR" will agree. Amen  :drink:

It makes no sense to make any change that will affect air flow through the engine and not retune.  Kind of like taking Marissa Miller to the prom and then spending the entire evening hanging with the guys.

The fact is that the only way you would know is if you have an AFR meter to view during all different riding conditions. These bike run lean from the get go and allowing more air to enter or leave the engine without also modifing the fuel delivery will affect the tune and cause it to run even leaner which also equals more heat.

I also rode about 10k miles without the Cat before i was able to do the Supertuner ( at my dealer ) and he messured the numbers before the tune .
We also have had the numbers with the Cat and there was a definitely loss of torque without the Cat not tuned .
So you won`t get problems but you loose torque by removing the Cat and not tuning it ( but the heat is improved a little bit ) but the heat is more improved when dynoed .

Thanks for the input guys - appreciate the experience.  What is AFR - air/fuel ratio?

I agree with Jerry. No sense in playing with the cat unless unless your going finish with a download.
