The answer is contained in the question.  EFI is fuel injection.  In 2001, the EFI was made by Marelli and had separate throttle plates and intake runners for each cylinder.  The carburetor bikes just had one carb.  So that is why you have to use a different air cleaner kit depending on whether the bike is carbureted or injected, the backplate opening for the throttle body is different than the one for a carb (or the later Delphi injection).
