Oil Level and Temperature Dipstick with Lighted LCD
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:27:51 PM »

I purchased a Oil Level and Temperature Dipstick with Lighted LCD when I bought my SERG.  Everytime I use it it registers "High Oil" and always flashes.  I pull the dip stick and checked the oil and it was at the full line but not above it.  I then inserted my old dip stick and it registered the same level.

Is this the normal operation?  I would expect it to only register FULL and not High Oil.  The LED never stays lit and only flashes.

These things are junk, I have one only few months old, Mine reads full all the time when its not, and they don't stay on all the time, not supposed to, battery would not last very long.

Mine works very good, check when oil is hot and then read the dipstick manually. it should be on the full line , if it is over that line you will get a high oil reading from the Temp dipstick, when mine is correct it just shows the temp and oil level for a few moments and then shuts off. Cold it shows 3/4 full.   Doc

takes only a small amount to put it over the line and flash. I keep my oil level at the 2nd bar. more than that, it pukes it out.

I had problems with the first one.  I returned works well.

I did find out that there is a new part for '09 so maybe there was issues with the older one that have been fixed with the new one.  I am not sure what the part numbers are but the old one was $135 and the new $139.

BTW the difference between the two was in the way the oil pickup was designed.

I am 0 for 3 - My original purchase - plus two returns/exchanges - and did not end up with a functioning Oil Level/Temperature dipstick...  So I said uncle and installed a dash mounted oil temperature gauge and went back to the original stock dipstick...   :nixweiss:

So, if I understand it, if there is a "problem" the LED flashes off and on quickly.  If everything is "okay" it stays lit for a few seconds and goes out?

It does come on when you push the button for 5 seconds or so..

However, if you push the button twice quickly, I believe it will stay on for up to two minutes. You can turn it off earlier by pushing the button once.

Since the latest MOTOCO session the new LCD dip sticks will come with a 1 year warranty instead of the old 90 day. This tells you there was a problem with them.  I bought one shortly after I got the SERGU and it pewked out 2 months later. I changed the button battery and it went out again after 2 days. Rather than throwing it away I investigated/diagnosed the causes of this poorly made dipstick failures. In my case it was the poor soldering of the PCB especially at the battery connection pads. I'm guessing that the new requirements to be lead free solder are one of the problems. Anyway once re-soldered most of the pads with lead/tin solder it's been working for a month. For nearly $150 bucks, I don't see the value. So you have have to buy a new one every year when the warranty runs out? Also what's the value of having a temp gauge that you can't read while riding? Can't figure why HD insists on putting the ridiculous air temp gauge instead of a proper oil temp gauge, ya know something useful?

Spot on, engine temp would be more important than ambient.

So they can sell you the oil temp gauge!  Also, the air temp gauge is cheaper for them to install.    :nixweiss:

Have had 4 of them and they all failed and gave erroneous data plus I don't want to know how hot my oil is here in Arizona so I just installed the stock chrome oil dipstick and have been happy ever since!! :2vrolijk_21: ;D
