Engine components blackening
« on: March 29, 2010, 02:41:21 PM »

I'm planning on blackening the engine on my FLHTCUSE5 BLK.  Every black components are available from the MoCo except for the pushrod covers and the tappet covers.

Any idea of what I should do to complete the job?  Powder coating?  Is it a pain in the a$$ to take those parts off?

I bought a set of used ones off of ebay, and sent those to the powdercoater.  No down time that way.  I think I paid 10 bucks for them, and the powdercoater charged $15.

If your motor uses stock or fixed length pushrods then yes it could be a pain.  There are 2 ways to get the existing pushrods out.

1.  If you buy adjustables you could take the tops off the pushrod covers and use a lock cutter to cut the pushrods out then just slip in the new adjustables and powder coated tubes.

2.  If you choose not to go this route you take off the tank, you remove the rockerbox tops, and the rockers and pull your pushrods out.

So the pain is up to you and the wallet.  If you buy new adjustables you might consider Harleys new Tapered or S&S.

5.56,

That is the ideal time to do the pushrod tubes especially if you are replacing the rockerboxes.  Especially if you want to retain your stock pushrods.
