Installing Harmon Kardon Hands Free Module on CVO ULTRA
« on: February 25, 2014, 10:55:57 PM »

I have a blue tooth module I took off my 06 Ultra and installed on my 11 Road Glide Ultra worked fine. Then I  Traded That Ultra for CVO.
Question is. Does anyone know if it will work on CVO?
I have not looked just that the trading dealer who was to swap it over said it wouldn't work because all connections were being used. Why can't you connect to..say.. cb plug? It still shows up on screen as phone when connected to any plug.

It's there anyone here ever swapped any of them to a CVO?

Thanks

If the CVO has the NIM module installed, the NIM audio lines are using the phone audio and mute lines.

I have one on my 09 CUSE4, so it works fine unless as IC says, you have a NIM installed - while that was not standard on my bike, it was on later years.  So - if you have a factory supplied Garmin Zumo 660, which you hear through your helmet speakers, it won't work.

Way too cheap!  Put it on Fleabay and you'll get more.

Please tell me how it works. I have an 06 CVO Ultra and may buy it from you.

It will not work on a CVO that is why he is thinking of selling it.

It WILL work on a CVO - I had it on my CUSE2 and CUSE4.  However, it will not work on any bike, CVO or not, that has the NIM installed (stock on the CVO bikes that came with a Roadtech 660.)  If you do not have the NIM installed, it will work with your (2006?) CVO.

Well my 06 CVO Ultra does NOT have a Road Tech 660. What is NIM? How does it work? How does the unit work?

Right now I have The SMH-10 unit on my helmets. I BT my phone to the Zumo 550, and BT the 550 to my helmet. In this way I can use the 550 to dial my phone. For music I BT my iPod to my helmets 2nd channel. Rider to passanger is wireless intercom. I am looking to BT with other systems so I can talk with riders who have Scala and Chatterbox.

Will this unit do that for me?

Thanks

Yes, it will work for you.  The NIM is the Navigation Interface Module that allows an RT 660 to interface with the HK and interrupt other audio.  The BT unit sits in the Tourpak (Do NOT put it in the fairing!) and the harness goes from there to inside the fairing.  You end up with a new item on the HK menu - "PHONE". It performs all the usual functions for a phone as you'd expect.  It can be fussy about which phones it connects to I'm told.

As to what you are asking beyond that, I don't know enough to follow it. Someone with more knowledge than me will be able to answer.

Since you have a 550 and not a 660 or 665 then you are not using the (Navigation Interface Module) NIM. Not having the NIM means that the channel (input) on the radio is not being used and can be used for the Bluetooth phone interface.

The problem you will have is the phone interface is designed to sync to a phone and output the signal to the radio (via a wired circuit). You can not use a Bluetooth helmet setup with the Harmon Kardon radio. You can not sync the Bluetooth interface to your GPS or your Sena headset (only to a phone). Even if you got them to sync the Bluetooth interface is not bi directional, in other words it will receive a Bluetooth signal but it does not transmit a Bluetooth signal. It uses a wired output circuit. Read the installation instruction for the NIM, it will only sync to a phone (and not all phones) it will only output its signal to the radio (via a wired circuit). In order to use it you have to use the wired headset.

Of course it is your money and maybe I do not understand exactly how you plan to use it since you are now using Bluetooth to make and take phone calls via the GPS Bluetooth feature. To me it will not work with your current setup.
