Summer Trip Need some Advice on route and Timeline
« on: April 12, 2010, 01:45:00 PM »

I'm trying to organize a trip from Rapid City through Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. Does any one have any suggestions for a good route, place to stay, must see, or other general advice for the trip. We are planning on being gone July 24th to 31st.
Thanks in advance Supershooter

Try to get a reservation at one of the National Park Lodges within Yellowstone. It's well worth the cost.

Or for something historic, the Irma Hotel in Cody, Wy.  Also be sure to spend a 2-3 hours at the museum in Cody.....well worth the time. :2vrolijk_21:

If you've never been to your two parks, one day each is not enough. Because you're at Yellowstone, don't forget the Tetons. Jackson makes a good overnight stay. Also, Yellowstone means traffic. Avoid the weekends. You're probably aware but fuel stops can be few and far between. Top off regularly.

Be sure to take a day trip over 'Going to the Sun Highway' which traverses across the top of Glacier Natl. Park. Suggest staying in Whitefish or Kalispell and taking day trips into the Park.

If you have time, route your trip through SE Montana into Yellowstone to ride the Beartooth Pass Highway.

Sure you'll have a great time regardless. We've done the Yellowstone-Glacier trips several times. I agree with all of the information already provided above.

If you can try to make your way up and across the Big Horn Mtns. Beautiful up there. Also youll be real close to Beartooth Pass, another must. And while your there might as well hit Red Lodge Montana. Cool little town. They have the Beartooth rally there every year. Just a suggestion

Should be a great trip for you.  I rode through both places last year.  Take some pictures of the few glaciers that are left in Glacier National Park.  They are all predicted to be gone by 2020.  I was up there 20 years ago, and the glaciers were very large.  They are few and far between now.  Beautiful riding; just not as many glaciers as there used to be.  Enjoy the ride.
