Steering head adjustment on '09 RG... need help.
« on: April 10, 2010, 03:54:15 PM »

Does anyone know how far you need to tear down an '09 Road Glide to perform this service? The service manual only says to remove the "instrument bezel". OK done. All I can see to do from here is loosen/remove the 1 1/2" upper nut.

Now what?

This might help.

I had the dealer do mine when it went in for the rear wheel recall.

I'm halfway into the procedure noted in your .pdf file.  Question is, do I need to remove the top plate (to access the adjusting nut) or not?  The .pdf is vague.

My trick is to take a center punch and punch the top of the adjustment nut. You can see the silver adjuster after you remove the 1 1/2' nut. The I use the center punch and a hammer and drive the nut tighter or looser which ever you need to make the adjustment. Much easier than trying to make the special tool and get it in there to adjust.

I bought one of those "special" tools to reach up there with last year at a swap meet. Never had occasion to use it yet. Does it actually help that much?  I had my doubts but for five bucks at the swap meet figured "what the hell?".
