Cam Tensioner Kit
« on: April 07, 2010, 11:03:15 AM »

Thinking it is time to dive into get the cam tensioners on my 103" replaced.

Is this kit a good one to use? And how about the oil pump that comes with it?

Keith, in application so far it has seemed a real improvement over the OE setup.  Having said that; I still like gear drive better.

The referenced kit allows you to reuse your existing cams, and that is the main advantage of that kit over replacing everything with current model parts.  If you use the current model cam plate and tensioner's, you will have to replace the cams with what is called "conversion" cams.  Conversion cams have the older model inner journal sizes, but the outer journals are the new size for use with the plain metal (bearingless) cam plate.  So I would say that unless you want to change cams while you're in there, use the kit you referenced.  If you do change cams, you can do it either way as long as you get the cams with the appropriate journal sizes.

The oil pump in that kit is the same pump currently used in production, and it has increased capacity compared to the pump in our 103's.  Increased capacity is a good thing.  I can't tell you if it's any better durability wise than the older model, or one of the aftermarket pumps.  But it definitely is less expensive than the aftermarket pumps.

If cost is a major consideration, this conversion is much more cost effective than gear drives.  Not as good in terms of absolute valve timing accuracy, but definitely more cost effective for a typical user.

I applied the kit to my wife's Pumpkin this winter. The baike is running really well with the kit.

I have an 06 Road Glide that I applied Gear Drive Andrews 37B. The darn engine all made made noise. So I pulled the geardrive cams and I'm in the process of applying another upgrade kit and going back the chain drive cams.

I highly recommend the Kit!
