Oil presure drop
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:18:30 AM »

I have a 10 CVO Ultra that has 900 miles on it. Oil has been changed twice, It has harley synthetic oil in it. When she first starts the oil presure is about 40, then afrer riding about 20 min. it drops down to about 10-15. Is this something I need to tell them about? Thanks

I thinik its because cold oil is mor viscous and develops higher pressure when pumped. When it warms up it thins and pressure drops.

Need a little clarification on the original situation and question.  At what rpm are you checking the oil pressure?  If you are talking about the pressure at idle, then what you described is perfectly normal.  When the engine and oil is cold, there is more resistance to flow and thus the pressure will be higher.  As the engine and oil heat up to normal operating temperatures, the oil thins out and the pressure drops back to the normal range.

its normal - at warm up the pressure of the oil increase to get the thicker oil around the motor, once warmed up and cruising pressure should be around 32psi and when you stop and the motor is idling it should drop to around 7-10psi, this has been discussed at length at the other forum im on as the newer members have been questioning the pressure drop.
the only reason its questioned is you can see it happen :D
If it drops to ZERO or blows off the scale then WORRY.
this pressure drop has been verified by HD-US, and i never really noticed due to riding dyna's/softails prior but noticed it on my 09 96" ultra and you the CVO does it as well

After 29K miles, that's exactly how my CUSE3 oil pressure fluctuates:  after warmed up (10 miles or so), 30 psi at 2000 RPM, 10 psi at idle (950 RPM).  My oil temp gauge will read about 180 or so after 10 miles in warm weather (70 deg and up).

my bike reminds me of a certain carrara that i had the great pleasure to get to ... uh, abuse..... in 78 or 79 or thereabouts...

the oil had to get hot enough that at 4k rpm the oil pressure was UNDER 10 psi for the waste gate to close

so you had to hot dog the damn thing all over for half a hour, i mean flog the thing.. then at the majic moment the oil got to the thin state and it would close the waste gate and it would squeal the tires in 4th gear at 80...

scary  :orange: o m fn g !!!

the part that required finess is that you had to pay attention to the oil pressure - with it above 10 psi you could floor the gas pedal and it was ok.. but if it was, say, 5 psi and you floored it you were going to hit a tree at 100 no matter what gear you happened to be in..

memories...  ;D
