New seat--Gel or no Gel
« on: April 09, 2010, 07:06:08 PM »

Thinking of a new seat for the wife's bike from C&C and they offer a gel insert....being that I never really did any long trips on a gel seat I need to ask...... Are they any better?

Just looking for any experienced opinions....

I had gel put into the seat of my 2006 SEUC and I noticed very little difference. I also had gel put into the solo seat of the wife's SE Fatboy. She says she can tell a huge difference, but the original seat had NO padding. If I were to do it again I would not spend the $450.00 that it cost to have  both seats done. I would probably just do the Fatboy. If the price you are quoted is not much more than the seat without gel, I would probably go for it. The seat on my 2010 SEUC is more comfortable than the gel seat was on the 2006

It's an $80 difference.

I have the Saddlemen Road Sofa on our 2008 Ultra Classic and has gel for both the driver and passenger.  The wife and I think it is the best seat ever.  You can order a Road Sofa and you have 48 hours to try it out and if you don't like it you can send it back.  I think the Road Sofa is the only seat that you can try out.

I forgot to add...We can add the gel later for the same price plus shipping. $80 extra now or $80 plus shipping later. So if it is no good it can be sent back and added.

I had a gelpad installed in my SEEG seat, Sorry i did.... Not much noticable comfort improvement, But HOT  :nervous:
on the backside in the summer riding months. Alligator Bob (Forum Member) will install a Pro Pad (medical foam) in your seat.... Much better choice. IMO  :2vrolijk_21:

Had gel in my Heritage...comfortable yes but man, when the sun shone on it for short periods of time, did it get hot...I swear I could fry bacon and eggs on it!

I just finalized a solo seat yesterday from C&C and talked to Chuck about gel...his advice was gel not necessary so I ordered seat without gel this time!

Thanks for the suggestion...I'm going to order without the gel and pray for the best. If that blows up there is always the Pro pad option.

We have had 2 Saddlemen seats with rider and passenger gel. they are very comfortable and provide considerable support. My wife is able to ride for extended trips without discomfort. While they are warm in the Sun as when we rode through Tennessee in August. Here in Indiana they do not seem any hotter than any other Black seat. Many mistake softer with better experience has shown that firmer is better in the long run. Those who have already decided to purchase a Gel from Saddlemen have been satisfied. We have purchased a Sundowner for the SESG but the Wife is not as happy with it as with the Gel. Most likely we Will purchase another Gel seat.

They do take a while to break in the ads state about 500 miles in my experience its more like 1,000. Definitely better than a stock seat from the first ride though. We have logged about 50,000 miles the last 3 years 2 up on the Softails with Gel seats and were very satisfied. Like every thing else each persons tastes are different.
