Summer 2011 - Lower States to Alaska

Planning to ride from SD to Alaska next summer. Should be about 4 - 5 weeks. Looking for any info from anyone who has done the trip before. Best time, best route, etc. etc.

Can't wait to see the replies. I'd like to do this one too in a few years. This year, for me, it's all the states west of the Mississippi. Leave in a couple of weeks.

FYI, I found this thread last year.  Real interesting with alot of pictures about some guys riding to the top of Alaska.  Takes awhile to get through it but I found all the pictures very interesting.

What bike do you plan on riding?  Friends here plan to go in a couple years - he on his streetglide and her on her fatbob.  Chit I'm not taking my cvo ultra up there.  Gonna have to get something else a bit more suited to the trip if I go.

Roger (Trapperdog) is going up next year.  He recently bought "another" brand of m/c for the trip.

I met a couple at Corbin about a month ago.  They were on a BMW dual sport type of bike.  They rode to the Artic Ocean last year.  He was telling me about riding the ice roads (that are on the TV series) but that at that time of year it's just big ol huge mud holes mile after mile.  Sounded like it was an adventure of a life time.  The lady didn't look the type that would have enjoyed something like that (she looked like she might be the high maint. type) but she said she loved it.  And the back seat of that bike sure didn't look to comfortable. :nixweiss:
