05 103"&5sp or 08 110"&6sp???
« on: April 24, 2010, 09:38:31 PM »

I am buying a CVO monday. I am torn between an 05 Fatboy with a 103 and 5 speed or a 08 dyna with a 110 with a 6 speed. I love both bikes. Hoping to get some thoughts on the engine combo`s to maybe help in these most difficult of time. LOL  Any thoughts on either?? Both have pipes and programmers and 3500 to 5000 miles on them. Thanks for any input.

My first question would be which bike "does it' for you?  This isn't buying a mid-sized 4-door sedan where they are all pretty much the same but for the 3 liter V6 or the 3.2 liter V6.  There is a lot more difference between a Softail and a Dyna than the engine.  Strictly between the two drive drain combinations I would go with the 103 (I have a 110).  They seemed to have gotten that one right, which cannot be said of the 110.  When I bought my first one the Fat Boy was the one I'd wanted since they came out, the Road King was the next most appealing.  Still have the Fat Boy (Evo), now added the SERK.  Besides the engine which one do you want?

Buy the fat boy and put a 6-spd in it. That will be the best of both worlds.

you need a 6 speed on a touring bike if you're "touring"

around town you can't use it

Had the 07 Dyna SE, I should have never gotten off of it. Absolutely loved it, but ran into some financial issues a while back. Love the flames on the 08. I have always loved the Fatboy from the day it hit the press releases. Then, once terminator got done with it I was sold..lol  I have come to the conclusion, that I am going to buy both....LOL My wife is going to leave me. I will miss her, when I am home with all that peace and quiet.. She does look good on her back.. I meant the back...So many damn decisions.. Im thinking putting in a 6speed if I need one might be a better option..lol Thanks for the help..

Rear suspension on Dyna much better. You could not give me another Softtail after riding my Deuce.

performance and comfort I would vote Dyna. Softails look better IMO, but you couldn't get me to buy one because I ride my bike. Ride is much more important than looks to me. Just have to decide which is better for you.

I really like my 08 dyna CVO. Putting pipes and auto tune on next month and looking forward to it.
Freaks her out when the stock pipes scrape the ground. Not a drop of oil yet and if you do want to
pass on the open road it is smooth butter in 6th gear.

Completely different bikes so how "you" ride is the Key???
bought a new 06 Heritage softail never happy with the 5 speed even around town (rural area) at 55 I found myself always trying to shift to the missing gear :( :( :(

could've (maybe should've) installed the 6 speed. Anyway bought an 07 Heritage Softail with 6 speed and the threw in a 96 ci for good measure :huepfenjump3:

Loved the 07 no concerns there if a hadn't ridden that damn 2010 SESG at Sturgis Demo Rides last year I'd probaby still have it!

So my 2 cents is the 110 and the 6 speed but you'll look good either way  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

In my opinion, like the sportster, everyone should have a softail once to get it out of there system. After that you never go back, comfort always wins in the end. Actually you should have a bagger and a bar bike, both have there place.  Doc

Easier to appreciate about any other bike once you have had a Softail  (softtail my ass) that is the definition of a Oxymoron......

I remember  a ride with a guy who was WAY more experienced than me. He was on a Night train, me on my 09 FLHX. We had to stop more for him to get gas ( a moot point in this arguement) but he was way slower in the turns and his lower back started to get the best of him. Performance is on the coil over shocks with more travel. Comfort is on the coil over shocks as well.

Another issue I just thought about is the ability to put mid or mid-forward controls on it. I don't know of any softail that allows that. As far as comfort and performance mid/mid forward are more comfortable because it takes weight off your ass and puts the weight more centered on the bike. The more your legs are under you the more you will "be in tune" with your ride. Sure forward controls looks cool, and are comfortable as long as you don't need to shift or need to brake, but that's what highway pegs are for. Also if you are under 5'7" (maybe even 5'9") closer controls are a must.
