Warranty Work
« on: February 17, 2006, 05:26:54 AM »

Good Morning All,

Okay, my 1999 FXR2 needs to go in to have some work done. The front rocker box gasket is leaking a bit, the outer primary gasket has a small leak on the upper front, and there is a small oil leak somewhere around the base of the rear jug.

I am the second owner of the bike. I bought it from the original owner who bought a "7 year extended warranty" through Harley when he bought the bike in April of 1999. He had the front rocker box gasket replaced in 2002 when the bike had about 7,000 mi. on it. He had the bike in for all the required maintenance on schedule. He did the 15k service just before I bought the bike last April. It now has 17k on the clock. I haven't had to do any scheduled maintenance yet.

So, here are a few questions some of you may have some answers to:

First, when is the warranty up on the bike? My logic says if you buy a 7 year extended warranty on a vehicle that has a 1 year warranty...you have a 8 year warranty. So, that would be April of 2007. At the very least it is through April of this year (total of 7 years warranty). What do you all think?

Next, the bike has a harley cam and V&H exhaust on it. On other threads here I have heard various discussions regarding modifications and warranty implications. My understanding is that HD would have to show that these mods are the cause of the leaks (none of the leaking areas were touched during installation of the cam and pipes). What have you experienced in these matters?

Lastly, the warranty says that the $50 (per service visit) deductible only applies to the first time a repair is made. Any subsequent repairs of the same part are repaired and the deductible is waived. Since the front rocker box gasket has already been replaced once, I shouldn't have to pay to have it done again. But, do you think they'll hit me for another $50 because of the other two leaks?

Thanks in advance for all the helpful answers. And for all the smart-@ss replies (such as "why are you worried about leaks? That's why you bought a Harley in the first place...so you can fix leaks...)  ;D we'll all get a few cheap chuckles. I'll take it in Saturday and see what happens. I'll keep ya'll posted.

1.Nope, it's 7 from the day it was bought.
2.The pipe shouldn't matter, if the engine hasn't been Stage 4'd you should be fine their too for warranty work.
3.Give it a try, 50 is 50.

Good luck with your bike.

I've always said warranty service is a factor how a particular dealer views a claim. Some seem to think that the money is coming out of their pocket and are difficult to work with. Others are on the opposite end of that spectrum. My dealer is excellant in covering warranty work, but the dealer 30 miles in the other direction wouldn't replace a defective bearing on a 1 week old bike if it was owned by their grandmother. Bottom line - - - - find the dealer in your area with the best rep for warranty service. And do it fast, you've got around 2 months of coverage left.

Spider,

Well, which dealer do you use? I'm not set on taking it to any particular dealer. I was going to take it to San Diego, but Biggs in O'side and El Cajon are both the same distance.

San Deigo H-D  Tell Jason the ast Service Manager Big Brian sent you. Lisa handles Warranty claims. She's a Devil Doll and one cool chick  Biggs is one of those screw your momma places on warranty in my book  El Cajon from what I've heard only wants to work on bikes they've sold

Fired,

Thanks for the response. Yes, the original owner got a transfer sheet from Harley. I sent it in right after I purchased the bike. I don't know if he could have received a refund from Harley for "cashing it in" rather than having it transfered to me.

Okay,

The bike is at San Diego...I dropped it of there this afternoon. Sorry Spider, Jason was off sick today (bring him a bowl of chicken soup). The service writer I worked with didn't think there would be any problem with getting the leaks fixed. He didn't know if I would have to pay another $50 deductible or not. He said he'd try to get it waived...we'll see.

Thanks to all for giving me the heads up info...
