New Progressive 940 Rear Shocks
« on: April 30, 2010, 09:27:14 PM »

For those of you considering the subject shocks, just helped a friend install a set on his 2009 FLHX and he is very pleased with the ride.  He is 5'8" with 29" inseam and needed to lower his bike slightly without compromising ride quality.  These new shocks seem to fit the bill.  Like the 440's, they are fully adjustable for load so they are easy to dial in for your particular application :2vrolijk_21:

Straight forward install, nothing complicated about it.  First, you'll need a jack to be able to raise and lower bike to accommodate slight adjustment to align shock bolts.  Disconnect air lines, etc. for HD shocks and remove one side at a time.  Follow Progressive directions and install appropriate bushings in shock eyes.  Bushings face inboard, reuse shock bolts and lockwasher with flat washer supplied in the kit.  Use some loctite "blue" on shock bolt threads and hand tighten.  Start with top bolt, then lower bolt.  Ratchet down on bolts and torque to 40 ft lbs.  Repeat process on the opposite side.
Shocks come from the factory set at softest setting.  I don't know you weight or whether you ride solo or two up, but I would start with adjusting the pre-load on the shock so the first ring is exposed, then test ride.  If you bottom out, adjust to the second ring.  It's trial and error and will depend on how you ride.

Sounds good thanks for the info.  I have the bike up on the jack with the front apart ready to do the suspension when I get off work today.

Yeah, use a jack. Don't try to install a set of 440's at the campground without a jack..........just sayin.

jacking it up just a little makes the job easier to align the 2nd bolt on each shock

How do the 940 shocks ride as compared to the 440 shocks?

also how much is it improved over stock air shocks?

My stock shocks are very rough riding especially 2 up, looking for a drastic
improvement.

the ride is much better on the 940s.  Not sure you are going to get anyone to change to the 940s after going with the 440s.  It took longer to jack it up and remove the saddle bags then it did to swap out the shocks.

I hate to say but so far I am not impressed with my 440's. When I set the pre-load so they don't bottom out they are too stiff. JMO.
