Floating Rear Rotor or Non Floating Rotor?
« on: June 13, 2010, 03:40:55 PM »

Just took my 2009 SERG in for a "Chatter" feeling when you hit the rear brake.  My bike has a whopping 4,500 miles on it.  The dealership had to replace the stock rotor and pads because they said the rotor was warped.  Also, they said this was not a warranty item since it is the way that people ride that causes this.  BS!  I asked them, why not put on a floating rotor, and they said the non floating rotor is actually recommended by HD now.  I think this is just a BS story, what do you think?  I still think that this should have been covered by HD's warranty.

You need to talk to someone higher in the food chain - warped rotors are definitely a warranty problem and should be covered as such.  And as for the non-floating rotors BS, H-D installs them because they're cheaper, not because they're better or recommended.

Tell your service manager you want to speak to his factory rep and if you still don't get any satisfaction call Harley-Davidson customer service (414) 343-4056.

I bet I know why the dealer said the non floating rotor was preferred. We all know to use our front brake more than our rear brakes, I bet Harley is trying to "dumb down" operation and make it less likely for a rider to get the braking mix off. This would be much less importand with ABS but all bikes don't have it. I am not sure, I bet that is one of the reasons or a way to justify not installing the better more expensive floating rotor.

I had a rear rotor warp on my 06 at about 15k miles, I put on a floating rotor to match the front.  25k miles on it with no issues.
