Gear Drives and crank run-out
« on: March 20, 2006, 09:11:51 PM »

The boys at Appleton H-D started on my gear drive conversion today. Upon checking the crank run-out they discovered that it was within HD specs for chain cams but had too much for the S&S gears and Head Quarters cams I planned to run. My first thought was to go with the HQ0039 cams in the chain drive, but instead opted to go with the Red Shift 575s. The tensioners were a little worn but the tech said it was about average in his opinion for 16K miles. Needless to say, new ones will be installed. I'm a little disappointed not to have the gear drives but oh well.

Gimme some feedback on this situation.

Yes I am interested also. I would have to get the book out on this one.

Just learning the in's and out's of gear drive cams myself, but I thought S&S offers over and undersized gears to help compensate for variations like this.

mattm,

S&S offers different size gears to adjust the depth of engagement, similar to what H-D had on the EVO engines.

From what I've read, most seem to thing under .002 on the pinion is needed.  There is some info on the gear lash on wood's site:   www.woodcarbs.com
My pinion varied to .0035 without the cam plate, but with it installed it varied to .002.  My gears are what I would describe as quiet, but I had to use an oversize inner rear cam gear.  Left the pinion and outer cam gear alone.

What made you switch your mind from the HQ cam to the Redshift?  Was it just the chain versus gear drive availability?

The Red Shifts were available now (not sure about the HQs). I just like the fact that Zipper's made this cam especially for the CVO 103. The HQs may have made better numbers overall, but it's tough to beat that torque curve on the 575s. It leaves me alot of room for future mods also.
