SERT and altitude changes.
« on: April 20, 2006, 06:34:04 PM »

I was talking with a mechanic, and he was trying to steer me away from the SERT, and towards a Cobra Fuel Managment system.

His stated concerns were that the SERT loses it's map all the time, and it has to be re-downloaded, and that if I were to ride my bike up to the Mountains, that the Map wouldn't run as well due to the altitude change from where the mapping was done.  Are thse concerns real, or is he just blowing smoke at me?

I SEE SMOKE SIGNALS IN THE AIR!!!!!!! The SERT is by no means perfect but what the hell is the Cobra Fuel Mangement System???? Not saying it is bad but I have never heard of it.

Ask him about the power commander and the thunder max. I would love to hear his anwser to that!

while i dont doubt that extreme altitude can affect the SERT or the PCIII or any other system, if the SERT's maps just dissappeard then all stock HD's would have the same issue the SERT does not add any physical componenets to the bike it just changes the map in the existing ECM

Damn Jerry you sure have a way with words. I think you sumed it up very well. I am also glad you are making the switch over to the Thunder Max. Once you get it you will love it and THE DAWG can even help you out if you want to tune it. It really is easy.

Doug,
Sounds like this person has been pissing in the wind, and somebody told him it was raining the reason he was getting wet. [smiley=nixweiss.gif] As BLM stated he's blowing smoke, and where there's smoke there is fire. Not to be harsh here, but I hope this isn't the person you letting work on your scooter. To me seems he's lacking in some basic knowledge. I've never been to MMI or any other mechanical school, but I read a lot of information and this is the first time I've ever heard of this. [smiley=confused5.gif]

I have ridden my bike from Virginia to South Dakota with original ECM w/o any problems, and have ridden it from Va. to New Hampshire with SERT again w/o any problem. I also frequently ride on Blue Ridge Parkway, and Skyline Drive where altitude changes significantly. I haven't lost the map in either one at anytime. I'm not to say that one couldn't loose a Map, as these are "electronic" gadgets, and anything can happen. Just seems to me that likelihood of this happening are few and far between.

Thanks for the input guys.  I really appreciate it.  I had a feeling I was bein sold a bill of goods, and was just looking for some verification.

I'm really new to all of this, but I have a propensity to jump into things with both feet, so I'm grateful I found this forum to gain a little guidance from.

I actually sent an E-mail this afternoon to Zippers, to inquire about the TMax, a Zippers Air Cleaner, and intake manifold and either some D&D FAt Cats, Thunderheaders or the new Bub/Rinehart 2-1 for my scooter.

5,180 ??????  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I LIVE at 6,200 and mine is running fine after a remap of the ECM to MOCO 06B. Some guys coming to CC intend to take their scoots to the top of Pikes Peak which is 14,000 and change!! (I WON'T be one of them ... I live here, remember?)

I AM looking forward to meeting all at CC!!!  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
