New 2010 110 Engine Teardown
« on: June 22, 2010, 08:58:18 AM »

Well I took the bike in to the dealer to have them look at my Primary for all the clacking and clinging noises and they found nothing wrong with the Primary. The Master Tech said what is causing all the noise on this new motor is Piston Slap or some tolerance issue that they wont tell me about until they tear into it.. I am leaving this Friday for a trip to Northern New Mexico and the Mechanic informed me the motor would be ok except that it will be noisy with clacking and clinging noises. They told me when I get back from my trip to schedule it in so they can teardown the motor and determine what is causing the clacking noise. Thank God they are going to give me a loaner ultra to ride while they do this work. They stated that if they determine it is crank or flywheel tolarances that our out they will install a new motor from York. I can't believe that I have to go through this mess again with the 110 motor. It took 2 years on my 08 SEUC to get that motor right and here we go again on a new 2010 SEUC.LOVE/HATE Relationship with Harley!! :'(

Sorry for your troubles.  Like you I thought they had these '110 problems' solved, lol.  Mine has been A-OK since the new engine about 43k ago.  But as I prepare for several long trips over the next few months I can't help but wonder if she'll make it.  Sure hope so.  Breakdowns on the road suck.

Give them a few more years, and some recalls and they'll get the 110" right maybe ? :nixweiss: They pushed the design limits on that and lost.

Don't count on it.  Besides, many of the problems being experienced aren't unique to the 110.  The bottom end of the engine is the same as the TC96, as is the primary, the trans, the electrical crap equipment, etc.

I'm amazed that a dealership Master Technician has the problem all figured out (but he can't/won't discuss it with the owner of the bike), and can assure the customer that it won't blow up.  I quote,  "informed me the motor would be ok except that it will be noisy with clacking and clinging noises".  I hope he agreed to cover all costs if his assurance turned out to be BS and the bike dies out on the road in the middle of nowhere.

I have been using Redline Products in the Primary and Transmission and Amsoil in the motor. I have 3200 miles on the bike.

Desertbear,

Seems like the rumors are turning out to be true that there is a back order on the cranks, some dealers are waiting 3 plus weeks, this maybe be why they have put you off.  Harley won't admit to the problem, but it is a big issue.

I was told that if it's a crank issue or fly wheel they will most probably R&R the motor.

Sorry to hear of your troubles and that you got rid of your white SEUC. I still have mine. The MOCO R&Red my engine 2200 miles ago.
I have to say, the new engine has transformed my bike into a real pleasure to own now. No irregular motor noise, there is some primary noise at maneuvering speeds, but thats always been there and I know what it is thats doing it. There is an aftermarket product out now that can supposedly get rid of that noise, although I haven't really looked into it yet. My new engine has plenty of power now, (for me) with no noise or hesitation up and down the powerband. I can snap it into triple digits quickly if I need to, and hot days (so far) haven't affected the vehicle's performance any, and I'm running stock exhaust with SE HI-Flo assembly. I washed my bike last weekend, and she still looks like new. One thing I do like, no more burned in oil stains at the base seals. My bike really looks great, and I'm really proud of it now. Hope you get your problems squared away with your new bike soon. JohnT. :2vrolijk_21:

I wasn't aware that it ever ended.  Changing the manufacturing tolerances to plus or minus "whatever" doesn't fix anything, it just perpetuates the problems until they get totally out of hand.

Thanks John T. I leave for New Mexico Friday morning and I hope that motor stays together till I get back. I'm sure it will like the cooler temps than what we are having now in AZ. When I leave work this afternoon it's suppose to be 108 degree's. I love to ride my Harley!!!!!
