Changing your Tourpak to detachable...
« on: July 12, 2010, 10:45:49 AM »

Hey Ultra owners,

I have a SESG that I am adding a King Tour Pak WITH the rear speakers.  The Dealer is telling me that the amp for the rear speakers will not fit with the detachable bracket and that the amp must be placed in the saddle bag and the bag has to be notched for wiring.

Have any of you guys made your KTP detachable?

Thanks in advance,
Keith M.

Take a look at this thread/post - Sticky Threads - Find Sticky Threads Here... there are several threads about making TP's detachable.

You might find this thread helpful that I started. Since it's dealing with my 2010 SE Ultra you might find there's useful information that's applicable to your '10 SESG. http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=45226.0

Perhaps a better alternative to the HD CVO HK amp would be Hogtunes new 4-channel, 160 watt (40W X 4) amp.  It mounts inside the fairing atop the head unit with or without CB and/or XM modules on the head unit.  You would still need speaker pods, speakers, and wiring, but you would not have a mounting issue with mouting an amp at the rear of the bike, and you would retain amplified front speakers when the tour pak is removed.

Here are the installation instructions from HT's website:

http://www.hogtunes.com/manuals_files/assets/Big_Ultra_Manual.pdf

160 Watts is the same power output for both amps.  I believe HT will sell the amp separately if you don't want their speakers.

You may find the installation instructions for HD's current rear speaker kit useful:  (1) they explain the wiring necessary; and, (2) provide the part nos. for the parts in the kit, importantly the rear speaker harness if you want HD pods/speakers with passenger controls.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Media/downloads/Service/isheets/-J03653.pdf

An alternative to HD's pods are aftermarket pods from Hogtunes, Dragonfly, and Eglidegoodies; the latter two use 6.5" speakers.  You could use aftermaket pods/speakers, and have passenger communications using HD's Boom Audio Music and Intercom kit, 77108-09.  The latter would provide intercom and passenger headset/mic with the tour pak off the bike.

You may also find this thread useful for reducing the length of wiring remaining on the bike (to be tucked away) when the tour pak is off the bike:

Good luck with your project.

Hy Keith,

the Amp fits under the fairing above the radio. I`ve done this with my FLHTCUSE5 and it works without any problems.

greetings from Germany

I posted some pics of how i did it on my ultra.  The amp fits perfect in the filler pannel between the fender and the saddlebags.  That way you don't have to do all the work moving stuff.  Takes about 20 mins to set it up there.
