Air Filter (intake noise)
« on: August 11, 2010, 04:00:40 PM »

I have a 2001 CVO Road Glide with the Screaming Eagle air cleaner kit and SuperTrapp SuperMeg pipe.  I would like to decrease intake/exhaust noise so my stereo system will be more enjoyable.  I am down to 14 discs in the muffler which is noticeably quieter without any loss in power.  I have decided that the intake noise is the major issue now.  Is there any free flowing air filter system that is less noisy than mine?  I know the stock system is much quieter but it exacts a large performance penalty.  Is there a way to have my cake and eat it too?  Any help greatly appreciated!

IF you still have the lowers on you may try removing them and see if that helps. :nixweiss: It has been said that the lowers amplify/echo the intake noises.

New amp and speakers. :2vrolijk_21:

I've never noticed any appreciable difference in intake noise going from stock to any aftermarket air cleaner assembly, especially to the point that I felt it affected the enjoyment of the sound system. :nixweiss:

Agree with Brian.  If you have not already. Upgrade the amp and speakers.  This worked for me:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=48903.0

in my country we have a saying: wash my fur but don't get me wet  ;D

If you want a nicely performing bike you will have to live with significant intake noise.

If you want a sound like in the Vienna Opera you should not start any engine  ;D

So the only solution I can see is overruling the intake noise by a superior stereo-equipment  ;)

In the end you will follow the line: spend even more money after having already spent significant money just to get a solution that invites you too look for - spending more money  ;D

I have found a restrictive exhaust to cause this effect, you could try adding more disc's to your pipe or remove the end cap and see if it helps.

Thanks for the input!  I don't ride much with the lowers on since I live in Texas.  Removing discs from the SuperTrapp didn't seem to have a discernable effect on the intake noise.  I was hoping there might be a free flowing air cleaner enclosed in an enclosure with an adjustable opening to allow tuning of noise/airflow, but that may be a non-existent part...  I am also experimenting with in ear monitors (IEMs)  which can give awesome sound and deliver substantial external noise reduction.  My sense at this time is that the IEM route can deliver much better sound than even the best fairing speaker system, (iPhone with Shure 530 IEMs).
