Exhaust Flange Nuts ...
« on: June 28, 2010, 08:28:38 PM »

On my ride to work this morning I started to hear an exhaust leak and then a few miles down the road it sounded as if the top end of the motor was coming apart. I stopped and found that both front nuts and one rear nut had not only backed off but were totally gone. I was able to find some nuts at work to replace them. Bike runs fine after this replacement. This is all on a 2009 Fat Bob with a D&D Fat Cat exhaust which was installed by the dealer before I bought the bike.

I intend on bringing the bike into the dealer to have the "proper" hardware reinstalled. Any advice on preventing this or other missing chit in the future? Do I have to periodically re-torque bolts and nuts or could this just have been an assembly error? Does exhaust need to be "hot torqued?

Thanks for any insight!

hey  Senior,  i had to use the  proper torque  wrench setting(in manual)  to keep that from happening, never used locktite on  them  ive broken them off tightening with out one last year, then had to take off the head and drill it out and replace stud,  not fun,

I've replaced the nuts and have rechecked them after a couple of hundred miles, they seem to be staying tight. More importantly though, I am a Hull Tech also. Are you still active duty?

Ignore the LocTite comment below - get aftermarket nuts with the serrations on the side facing the flange - they never come loose.  H-Ds are smooth on the surface facing the flange.

Keep 2 of them in the tool pouch...along with a few other parts that always seem to fall off :soapbox: or break
