VH Hi Output sound change with time?
« on: July 15, 2010, 02:40:22 PM »

Hi,

Just got some Hi Output Vance and Hine slip on mufflers and Power duals header pipes installed.  Though they sound great when the motor winds up a bit, the mufflers sound very bassy  to me particularly at lower rpm putting speeds.  I was hoping they would develop a little more crack to them in time.  Has anyone that has these notice any change in the sound after some break in time?

Thanks

Dennis

I don't have that specific setup but any muffler with glass packing can change sound as it burns in/out, packs down, or plugs up. Usually it happens so slowly that it isn't even noticed.

If your baffles come out try removing packing, it may give you more crack to the sound.

Seems to me that the glass packing softens and mellows out the sound or deadens a sometimes tinny sound. Beautiful sound is in the ear of the beholder!

Thanks for the reply`.

Well they are sounding better already.  I think it may have something to do with having the mufflers installed and getting a dyno tune in Pennsylvania and trailering the bike back home to Ohio before riding it again.  It was tuned at a higher elevation and I think my EFI took a little time to make the corrections.  The bike sounds and runs much better after a number of hours of riding it.  Or maybe the mufflers are breaking in a bit as well.  I think I would still like a touch more crack, so I will wait a while longer and see if it evolves a bit more and then consider altering the fiberglass a bit.

I know some of you guys with this setup are out here....  It was you guys that talked me into buying this stuff!  what say you?  Any changes that you noticed with time?  :nixweiss:

Hi!

I don't have your bike/setup but with my V&H Big Radius 2:2 on my Springer (stock air filter) I've noticed that the EFI took a long time to adapt. The initial sound was very harsh but last weekend I've done a long trip (about 500 miles) and since that the sound has changed very much, sounds much deeper now and a lot less deceleration poping now. So I guess it changes by the time.
